Recently there was a story on the news about a "normal" high school kid about to graduate, no problems that anyone KNEW of at all and he just went crazy and killed his family and then himself, why? what kind of mental illness causes people to snap like this ?

Sometimes I think about this...similiar story except I am the person who snaps. Do any of you? At least it was worse a few weeks ago. I often couldn't comprehend living anymore so I thought of killing myself. I would picture the headlines...something about me being talented and smart and having no "problems" and not even serious problems in childhood--then suddenly "snapping." I would often have these terrible fantasies as if I was daring myself that I could do something to myself that others would think of unspeakable. I have no idea why...all i can say is that I have some sort of perverted desire for acceptance from others although i already have all the acceptance I need. I don't know. Sorry to digress. This just came to mind. What a terrible story.

Schizophrenia makes people delusionary and have hallucinations. They can really believe someone is trying to kill them, and they can get caught up in any number of thoughts that tell them they must kill in order not to be killed. I presume this is the farmhouse case you're talking about.

Who judged the student as normal? We often don't know the full story behind anything until we've lived it. His parents could have beat him around for years before I finally "snapped" and went on a killing spree.

The story could be very complicated and winding, or as simple as a psychotic episode.
