Just wondering if anyone else experiences this. - While really tired and drifting off to sleep do any of you catch your thoughts turning into completely random off the wall thoughts.

If that makes any sense.

For a crazy example, your thoughts are rational (thinking about the next day etc) then bang.... big purple giant monkeys start dancing about in there. I hope I don't sound too crazy.

Keep in mind, I said while drifting off to sleep ok, lol.

That sounds completely normal. I think that everyone has weird thoughts before they fall asleep. For me it seems like I have these weird thoughts, then they turn into my dream. One time I was thinking about rational things, then the next minute I was imagining Foghorn Leghorn (the rooster in Looney Toons) chasing me around a log cabin...Eh. Still, I think it's completely normal.

I get this when I am really tired. Last weekend, I drove overnight back from Vermont to Pennsylvania. When I tried to close my eyes and fall asleep at 5AM, I had weird visions of monsters dancing in front of my eyes.

I wasn't freaked out because I believe this is "normal" even in some people that don't have DP. I think it's a mental reaction to fatigue or stress.

Unfortunately, it's always weird things. I never seem to get a vision of Jessica Alba on a beach. Damn it.

its not until my mind fixates on a certain subject that i can drift off....i usually think about women or playing guitar to send me off to sleep

Hey Anthony,

Long time no talk, it's been well over 2 years. What happened to you? Anyhow, I get bizarre thoughts too. I get thoughts of death and destruction that seem so real when drifting off to sleep. I get images of war, bombings, murder, rape etc..The scary thing is that these thoughts seem so real and they really affect me when drifting off to sleep; they don't seem to affect me that much when I am consciouss. It's like when you are about to go into that realm of unconsciousness, the mind sees reality in a totally skewed way. Make any sense? Well, nice hearing from ya again. Peace

This is all completely normal.

The common answer is that when you're going to sleep the right hemisphere of your brain is engaging and, as such, you're thoughts turn away from rationality to creativity and anything else "mad" you can think of.

You're kind of half way between being asleep and being in a dream, and it's perfectly normal to be thinking irrational and "weird" or "crazy" thoughts. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Imagine,
I have those crazy nighttime and early morning slide shows all the time and honestly they scare the s#$t out of me. That is all I really can say about that. Nice to know that I am not alone. Take care of yourself.

Sleep is just a weird thing altogether - without it you can really wig out, and during it you're really under a state of controlled insanity. I sometimes hear sounds or voices right before I fall asleep (minutes before I do) - very vivid kind of thing. The difference is that I know it's all in my mind and, honestly, most people I talk to say they experience it to...especially when they're tired.

When it comes to sleep I try not to judge my sanity based off the odd things it does to me. Sleep is just weird.

I know exactly what you mean - it wouldn't be so bad if it was totally dark but it's not. This combined with tinnitus (Had it as long as I can remember) can make sleep a bit difficult.

I think it's my senses working overtime for some reason...I'm sure Janine could comment.
