Do you have DP 24/7? Have you ever had DP while traveling before? My first DP experience happened while traveling and then for a little while it only happened when traveling, but soon developed into a 24/7 thing. It is always worse when I travel, but maybe that's just a personal thing.

But anyways... I would say go for it. Don't let this shit control your life. If you want to travel, go travel. Face your fears... that's what I've been tryin' to do.

Hi Jammy,

It is pretty amazing the number of times I have read about people on this site going traveling for extended periods of time. Usually they will post about being concerned about an upcoming trip, but then return having had a very positive time. Not everyone of course can do it, but many do.

A year or so ago I drove a motorhome, for the first time ever, from the east coast to the west coast so my Dad could see the Redwoods and Pacific Ocean before he lost his sight completely to macular degeneration. Granted, I was traumatized from how awful my Dad, Stepmother and husband got along...but I damn drove that motorhome!

It is amazing how sheer willpower...and in my case, a little medication...can help one overcome some of their most major life obstacles.

I hope your trip does work out for you. Begin to see it. It can happen.

Most sincerely,
terri

Sorry Peacedove, you posted while I was typing. I didn't want you to think I was making light of the fact you had a difficult time traveling. It was really great of you to say to go for it after having such a time yourself.

I think that is what makes this a good support site. Even if someone can't do something, they support the other one and hope for the best for them.

That is good stuff.

Please do it. Don't let your DP stop you from doing anything. If you do, it wins, and you'll slip a little further down the ladder. Even if you feel scared, anxious, you have to try and keep living. And I'll wager that if you make that first step and get on the plane, you might even start to forget about your DP. Concentrate on all the places you are going to see, the new experiences, new people, that kind of stuff. Feel excited. The distraction of travelling is a sure fire way of dampening down your DP. Tell your DP to go stick itself up it's arse. Don't let it deny you the right to life.

And send us a postcard.

i have found that travel helps. it's a good distraction and you don't panic about everything feeling foreign because it is.

yes, when my dp is at bearable levels and my familiar environment feels unfamiliar it panics me but when in an unfamiliar place the fact that it should feel unfamiliar helps me to rationalise the panic.

i think travel depends on the severity of your dp. when dp hits full on i am unable to function due to unbearable levels of fear and when in that state just getting through the minutes is enough.

with me, when dp starts to lift to the level where i am able to start to help myself, action and distraction are of most help to me in the recovery process.

i think if i'm at the level where i can consider going traveling, work etc then i'm ready to start fighting. eventually the activity/distraction starts to become easier
