I had an email from somebody who knows about DP, and I was saying how mine is caused by trauma/anxiety and how each episode I have had has got longer, he wrote this back and it has frightened me a lot:-

Well, Like many DP people, you sound intelligent and analytical. All
you have said makes sense, and I do think the move to the tricyclic will help in time.
Sometimes, it occurs to me, DPD may itself be cyclical, and worsen with each repeated cycle. This seems to be the case with depression. So I would give some thought to a maintenance dosage of the best med, to be on guard for the time when the cycle is due again. It may not necessarily be linked to specific events at this point. Often DPD develops a life of its own regardless of what life events come or go. Initially it may have been set off because of some even coupled with your natural predisposition to it. But once that happens, it
seems more likely to me, based on the research and the zillions of
people i've discussed it with, that it does indeed have a life cycle of its own, with a
propensity for each episode to be more severe. I could be wrong, of
course. But this is where the evidence points, which is why it is very wise to build up a chemical "floor" of safety for those times when it is due to erupt again.
