Not sure that what you are describing is much different from other forms of wishful thinking, such as religious beliefs and behaviors in the name of said belief. Many people believe they have psychic powers too, for example. I don't see any evidence of what psychiatrists call schizophrenia from what you've posted here, at least. Especially given the fact that he acknowledges how silly it is.
Has he expressed concern about his own behavior? Does it bother him, or does it just bother you? He does appear to acknowledge his own mortality and experiences existential thinking to a strong degree though. For those problems perhaps the best you can do is recommend a therapist and support him in whatever way you can.
