Currently I see a psychiatrist every 2 months and he prescribes me meds and we catch up for about 15 minutes about anything new that's going on in my life. There's usually nothing much new considering I have no life. I feel relatively comfortable with him, I've told him EVERYTHING about myself. And I don't tell anyone everything about myself except maybe my mom. But the thing is, I sometimes wonder if I need some more in depth therapy. He's more than likely gonna retire within the next 5 years or so. He already only sees patients twice a week and took me on only as a favor to my mom. She's a psychiatric nurse at the hospital here. I like psychiatrists because they seem smarter than your run of the mill "counselor". But with all people in this profession it's a trial and error thing. 90% don't have a clue what's going on with me and most don't really care.
So, Janine is always talking about "talk therapy." Who would I go to for this sort of thing? I always thought psychiatrists were just there to prescribe meds but do some do more in depth therapy? I'm just wondering what my choices are. I live in the U.S. by the way.

You would want to meet with a doctor that practices psychoanalysis. Many psychiatrists are "run of the mill" but you can very easily find out if a particular doctor will do this type of therapy by a quick phone call. Hope this helps.
