I have an auditory hallucination, and I've had it all my life. It's a really weird one but I feel that it will be okay to say it here. I told my therapist about it and she can't really explain it. It certainly doesn't affect my living in any way except that's it's just weird and a bit uncomfortable...

Whenever I have a physical discomfort, or a serious pain I get a fully audiable sound inside my head just behind my left ear (inside the skull) that goes for about 2-3 seconds. It's a whirring noise, like a muffled rrrrr-ing (if you go "rrrrr" slowly with your mouth closed that's very close, more like a low "mmmm" I suppose). It's absolutely audiable to me and there's a feeling as well like a fan or like a moth is flapping it's wings behind my ear. That's the closest I can explain it.

It's the only auditory hallucination I have ever had (that I can recall) but it's always there if there is a discomfort that goes beyond a threshold of annoyance. Like when there's an itch I can't scratch, or when I need to empty my bladder (which is very frequent). I am aware of a single drop in my bladder and it annoys me (which triggers the whirring). I have to constantly go to the bathroom (every half-hour) if that's possible (not stuck on a bus or something) but that's a different problem. It's just an example of what sets this noise off.

It's so odd but it doesn't stop me functioning if you know what I mean, so I can ignore it. I thought it might be a very specific brain damage so minute that it only does this and nothing else but what are the odds ?

I have some other stuff going on too some of which I tried to explain in an earlier thread (OCD, feeling stuck as "me" - unique different point of view issue, panic attacks, weird visual stuff that I have learned to accept, sensitivity to light - I love the dark, office florescent lights get on my nerves - they're so dry and bright, sensitive to loud noises sometimes depending on my mood - for example if someone is washing dishes the banging of the plates irritates me, not good with emotions - I'd rather numb them out, extreme introvert, boredom, amotivation) anyway...

Does anyone have any auditory hallucinations that are very sort of tangable ?

I did a search and found reports of hearing voices but that's all I could find. To be honest I'd like to get rid of mine if I had a choice. I don't think ignoring could be as satisfying as not having. If you think I'm really screwed up so be it.

I wouldn't class that as a auditory hallucination myself. When people see the word 'hallucination' it brings all sorts of baggage with it. Things like tinitus aren't classed as hallucinations, and I'd have a guess that your experience is something similar. I know that when I have a major headache I get 'buzzing' in my ear.

Either way I wouldn't worry about it too much. I really doubt it's connected to your DR/DP.

Excellent. Thanks so much. I thought because it's related to discomfort it might be something weird. I must check out tinitus. Thanks again.

Yeah, it probably tinnitus like or something that's just annoying but harmless. If it wasn't for that I probably wouldn't go to the bathroom so much so it does kind of affect me but it's just one of those things I have to add to my list of ignores.

I frequently hear and feel a "vibrating" or "thumping" in my left ear. I can't really pinpoint what triggers it, but I do know that a hair dryer blowing in or around my right ear ALWAYS sets it off. It's like a muscle is spazzing out somewhere around my eardrum...
