i wouldnt think quitting would make dp worse. on the contrary quitting now greatly increases your chances of not getting cancer and shit like that so in any case quitting is beneficial. i smoke and sometimes i wish i hadnt but then it lures me back in. don't think that quitting is bad, its good for you!

lately, ive been smoking over 2 packs of marlrlrlrrlboro per day...so going off probably will initially make it a living hell :x :x bt imma try anyway wish me.

I used to smoke alot. Its been years since I have. It took me many times to quit. I can assure you its not easy and it does make you anxious and frustrated but in the long run, when you are finally smoke free you will be proud of yourself, it will be easier to get up in the morning, things will smell better to you and your health in general will improve, you will have alot more energy etc. Note, this will not happen in one week of quitting etc but it takes a while.
My dp comes and goes but I cant say quitting made it worse actually I could breath alot easier when the pressure starts.

I quit a year ago halloween. And i quit when my DP and anxiety was very high. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're absolutely sure you want to quit as it can be a very powerful crutch when dealing with anxiety and dp. I went cold turkey and the first week was pretty difficult. After awhile though, you start to notice the difference in your physical (and mental, for me) health, and it can even be a catalyst to break you out of the DP funk. However, the first week is excrutiating. If you're willing to sail through the storm to reach calmer seas, then do it, but be sure you know what you're getting yourself into. I would also suggest setting a date (Halloween for me, which seems to figure largely into major changes in my life) which is significant somehow...a birthday, a new year, etc. You're less inclined to go back to smoking as it will take, usually, another year before you'll get back to the date. Anyway, psychologically it seems to help.

I've been seriously thinking of quitting lately too, but I'm scared it will interfere with my panic attacks and all. But what if I have panic and anxuety forever, am I gonna smoke forever? Sometimes I think you just have to bite the bullet.

I have been there, like I said, it is VERY hard but when you finally do it it will have been worth a few panic attacks etc no matter how bad that sounds becuase you will feel alot stronger that you finally beat the habit Its not easy and trust me there are still days after so many years of quitting that I think how I would BEG someone for a cigarrette , it comes and goes and so far I havent fell off the wagon.

Good luck to anyone trying to quit, it is hard but will make you feel so much better you just have to take it one day at a time, reward yourself for each day without a drag and eventually even though you think you wont, you will do it.

Haven't had a cigarette for at least seven years now but when I gave them the flick I didn't have DP/DR so I can't help you. But I did have a cigar around xmas time and 30 mins later I had an anxiety attack - must have been the nicotine seeping into my blood stream from the inside of my mouth (I never draw back a cigar) and it was the worst feeling, racing heart, head pressure etc., so if you ask me I think it could only help with lowering anxiety levels. If you don't do it for yourself, do it for others. There is nothing worse than entering the lift first thing in the morning and smelling the putrid smoke odour when smoker steps in and I can almost guarantee they'll be over weight, holding a bacon roll in one hand and a can of coke in the other - hmmmm, great way to start the morning. My advice, quit the ****, it's a filthy habit. It can only help.

wow! you quit when your dp and anxiety were high?! i am impressed. i have been toying with the idea of quitting for years but i just can't seem to do it. when i'm feeling really dred, a cigarette helps to bring me back to reality. i do think that i'll quit sometime this year...hopefully.

I think quitting will probably help. Doesn't nicotine actually increase your heart rate? I do it out of habit, but they actually make me more anxious. They really don't calm me down at all. It is a little break from the world that it stressing me out so much, but I really don't find comfort in the cigs anymore either so i am trying to quit.

I quit smoking and it was easy, but smoking was helpful while I was out and socializing and now I don't have that... I was in the hospital and just didn't smoke, so I don't have any tips on quitting. I guess I wasn't that addicted. I think quitting will make it worse if you're really addicted because you'll most likely become really anxious, but give it a try.

After nearly 30 years of smoking...at the end almost 2 packs a day...I quit 6 years ago this coming Dec.27. I was an anxiety smoker and quitting was hell. I spent the first week locked up in my Mom and StepDad's non-smoking house. I stayed in the bed much of the time as I reaaaaaallllly wanted a cig. I have been thru lots of high stress situations since I quit and have not started back. I do still crave them in times of anxiety. What I don't have any more are those little heart flutters I would get from smoking and drinking coke. I have not had a panic attack since I quit.

It can be done. I had to totally stay away from smokers to do it. Though I miss them madly, I would never go back.

I know all of you can become smoke-free. Just say no. :wink:

i hear stories like yours, terri*, and they give me hope. i have tried to quit soooo many times and i just haven't been able to do it.

it is mildly discouraging, though, that after 6 years of being smoke free, you still crave them.

Do I smoke regularly? No. Although I've heard it helps a lot of people formulate strength and confidence, with my current state as it is I think becoming dependant on a stimulant would be catastrophic.

I do, however, smoke fine cigars. I'll pick one out of the humidor once every month Some of them have really nice flavours (Cohiba, Jos? La Piedra, Boliva, etc). Anyone else smoke habanos? :D
