Hey pdr

Well, I took Ritalin for a while. Umm, what can I say. I can't really say anything bad about it. It helped me tremendously with concetration and my schoolwork. It acted as an anti depressant as well, and I was quite the talker. The only drawbacks I can think of are increased blood pressure, headaches and insomnia. These went away after the first few days though. When I quit taking it, I had no DPDR but felt very sluggish and slowed down. Not depressed, just sluggish. It quickly went away. My experience with it was great. It did at times make me feel wired up, but it did calm my thinking. One thing you'll want to watch is the anxiety. I took the ritalin before I had an anxiety disorder, so whatever increase in anxiety there was due to the meds, it wasn't too much to handle. I would not take Ritalin now because of my anxiety issues. If you want to try Ritalin, I would suggest 10-20 mg of Concerta. Concerta is a really well made pill and very effective. Most adults who take it usually don't take less than 20mg, but we are all different. Talk to your doc if you think Ritalin will help you.

Yep, what Ken just said.

Remember, Ritalin is a stimulant - it makes you FEEL good. It perks up your concentration and your cognitive functioning. But....it can make you feel BETTER than good. It's not the drug for someone who has bombarding thoughts due to psychological causes.

THink of someone who comes to the doctor complaining that their legs bleed all the time. "I can't wear pants! There's always blood all over them...I bleed too much. Please give me something to make me not bleed."

So the accomodating doctor prescribes a high potency medication that forces blood clotting. First, that's dangerous. Second, we don't know why the patient is bleeding in the first place!

If he is a hemophilliac, then sure, clotters are good.

Hemophilliacs are very very rare.

When we interview our little patient intensely, we suddenly find out that every day he has a habit of running three miles, wearing shorts and jumping over high rose bushes.

Thorns.

Cuts.

Legs bleed. Constantly. All over the place.

The blood clotter would then be a band-aid (and one with major risks), not a solution.

i have a friend who suffered from dp as well...she too tried ritalin and said she did find that it relieved her symptoms a bit. She was then switched to concerta in addition to taking (wellbutrin xl, klonopin, and small dose of geodon) she is currently symptom free and says she feels great. She is in the process of weaning off all meds.
i have not tried any of the above meds as my doctor does not want to try this course of drug therapy.
