My mum has been taking a low dose (25mg) of quetiapine (Seroquel) for the last few days before bed. She has already seen some relief but we are wondering what recovery looked like for others who took anti psychotics.

How long did they take to show any change for you?

How did it feel it terms of symptoms - did you feel completely better straight away or was it a winding path?

anti-psychotics are not known as a drug that can give relief to depersonalization disorder in its primary form. The depersonalization research unit wrote in a publication that in over 500. patients they had seen some saw their depersonalization gets much worse if a psychiatrist mistook the disorder as a psychotic state and they where given anti-psychotics in high doses. So, few might see some benefits in low doses.

Depersonalization is both a disorder and a symptom. It can be a symptom secondary to many psychiatric and organic states. In psychiatric is in seen as secondary to states like anxiety, depression, OCD, borderline disorder. When it is secondary to something it should in many cases go away when the primary cause is addressed. A low dose of anti-psychotics can work on anxiety. I think you mother have a anxiety condition and with secondary symptoms of depersonalization and might explain the response. You could try some anti-depressants or a drug like buspirone for her anxiety. Depersonalization symptoms will follow out with the anxiety.

I don't think a daily dose of 25mg of Seroquel is a therapeutic dose for any psychiatric disorder.

The listed dosage range for Seroquel is 150-750mg. It is recommended at 25mg at 12 hour intervals

for the first day, with increasing dose increments until the target daily dose is reached. Of course, there

is always the placebo effect to consider.

It is not a anti-psychotic dose. It is very sedating in a low dose and often used in this dose for sleep as an alternative to a benzodiazepine and for anxiety. An alternative for a similar effect is typically Mirtazapine 15.mg.
