Our family has a total of 11 pets. 2 cats, 3 dogs, 2 birds, and 4 ponies. My mother and I love all of our pets. My brother likes all of them except the ponies. But my father doesn't like any of our pets. He doesn't even call them by their names. He just calls them "Dog" or "Cat". He never pays attention to them or anything. It really bothers me that my father doesn't like our pets. I don't really want to start arguing with him about why he should love them. Is there anyway I can get him to at least call the animals by their names or give them some attention every now and then?

Speaking as an old f*rt myself, we're pretty set in our ways.

If your dad was never a great animal lover to begin with, it's probably not realistic to hope that he'll ever start picking them up (unless it's to bag 'em up and take them some place watery), or calling them by their names (as if they were people).

In your place, I'd just assume as much responsibility for them as possible just so the gruff ol' codger can keep tolerating them as much as he has been.

I know it doesn't sound too encouraging, but when I was a kid, I felt fortunate if my dad would even let me keep an animal.

So just try to be glad that he's not talking about getting rid of them. (That's something, at least. And something is always better than nothing, as they say.)

What a menagerie !! Remind me not to build a house downwind of yours.

Seriously though, a lot of men can be a bit brutish towards animals. I don't understand it myself, as I adore animals (except cats and anything capable of killing me - which I guess means anything from a flea upwards).
