Fellow DP sufferers...I'm new to this site but not to DP and/or anxiety. I have read Janine's book and found it to be very helpful. I would like to know how many of you can offer a ray of hope and some POSITIVE insight into coming out of this ok..From what I have read so far in the
forum it seems like a few of you have made it through...How? What is the secret? What can you recommend? Thnx to any or all who reply...

i reccomend ignoring it as much as you can. instead of thinking about the DP do something to keep your mind occupied and eventually it will go away. whenever i feel odd or something from the DP i think of something positive over and over again and it goes away. Hope you feel better soon!

dont even try fighting that shit, just take lots of vitamins/supplements, sleep excercise and it should either fade to a minimum or disappear completely it takes time and understanding

omega 3, DMAE, St. Johns Wort, 5 Htp, Selenium, Ginkgo Bilobo, Melotonin, I have found Selenium to manage my DR symptoms, Ginkgo Bilobo helped with my short term memory, St Johns Wort helped with my motivation and helped stabilize my mood, Omega 3 helps support a healthy mind, DMAE helped me almost completely eliminate my symptoms in the mornings but they came back through out the day, i have only taken it for a week. Melotonin helps with sleep and helps you sleep good. 5 htp helped with the mood. If you take these it will help your mind keep more stable, Also you need excersiise and good nutrition, i mean healthy foods not junk like mc'donalds. It takes alot to beat this, but if your strong enough you will surely beat it. Try not to analyze it , keep it down to a minimum. The whole key to winning it is to not focus on it, focus outwards by doing activities, work, sports, drive, friends, gym. I hope you can do it. Good luck

Johnny - wow thanks for all that info - I guess I'll have to hit the vitamin shop and get out my credit card! (I'll pay anything to be on the other side of this thing). And you're right too - the more attention you give it- the more it messes with your head. Have you recovered yet? How long have you had your symptoms? Thanks again..

i have not recovered yet, i got it in january of 04 when i got it the symptoms were unbearable, i went to the vitamin store and bought all the vitamins i thought would help, i did alot of expirementing and the ones i listed helped with my symptoms and helped get me much better, i felt that i could control it more, take them everyday have a good diet and you should see your symptoms tone down alot every 2-3 months or so, maybe faster Right now my symptoms are alot less than before but hell its still sucks, its annoying and im just working really hard to get back 100 percent , right now i would say im at 65 percent , 12 months ago i was 0 percent good.

Ok but please take care with supplements and meds..... some aren't made to go together, like 5HTP and St.John's wort, it can be dangerous to combine.

Take care!

Hey Willow

Welcome to the board. Well there is good news with DP. It is temporary given that you take necessary steps to get better. You asked above what I would recommend. I would recommend this:

1. Get into some sort of individual therapy whether it is with a CBT specialist (psychologist) or psychoanalytic therapy (psychiatrist). Make sure the person you see has heard of the disorder. If not, then leave. In the therapy, be completely honest and get to know the therapist well. This will foster an atmosphere that allows you to be open with all of your concerns. Talking about the most hidden issues in life with a trusted person brings about healing.

2. Understand that meds will not heal you, they can only provide support
and aid you in getting on with your life. For example, anxiety and depression seem to be 2 concurrrent issues with DPDR. Sometimes these can aggravate the condition to where you need meds to function. In this case, keep your meds/herbs options open.

3. Stay busy with your life. As you read in Janine's book, becoming re-engaged in the drama of your own life instead of taking a fearful position of observing it will help you heal. Something has happened to our egos that creates these DP states. By staying connected to life, and getting into this altered looking world, our ego begins to heal even though it can be completely frightening. This is a daily and challenging task. It is not by any means easy to do, but it will bring you to a place of healing. Focus outward. You cannot heal by examining yourself. That only aggravates the illness.

Do the above 3 things and you will get there. You'll know you have healed when one day you look back and you'll say "Wow, I haven't had crazy thoughts in a long time. I feel like my old self again." Just keep striving for that day. It will happen, so don't get down on yourself. We need to fall before we can stand.

I thought 5-htp and SJW were meant to go together lol. I think they make a product called Amoryn where you get both of those in the pills.
I do know that synthetic 5-htp has been scrutinized for causing fibrosis of the heart muscle. Whether it really does still isn't known, but too much to risk there :(

Ken, Cynthia & Johnny...Thanks you guys for all the great advice. Ken - you seem like you really know your way around this DP thing..It's great to know that there are so many other nice, caring people who are out there in the same boat. It seems like those 2 old sayings - "Misery loves company" and "theres safety in numbers" applies here too. I am a St. Johns Wort person and vitamins are cool too. Heres to all of us feeling like our "old Selves" again real soon!
