I'm sure we've done this one before, but I was reminded of this last evening: under no circumstance should I ever, ever take a nap.
Layed down on the couch after dinner for just a SECOND. Honest, that was my plan. My back has been bothering me again, and I thought if I layed flat for a bit it would help. That was about 7:30 p.m.. Woke up at what turned out to be about 10:30 to the sounds of everyone else in the house. I thought it was the next morning. Totally disoriented, and for a long time after. Then of course I couldn't go to sleep once I finally actually went to bed. I'm still extra wacky this morning.
Now, when this first started for me - I woke up DP'ed. Went to bed normal one night/woke up not. The situation with napping seems to lend credence to my theory that sleep cycles are involved somehow, at least for me. As if that morning long ago when I woke up DP'ed - I never really woke up at all. And have been stuck in Stage 1/2 sleep or something ever since.
Whatever though, if anybody here ever wants to give me good advice - remind me to NOT take naps. Sheesh..........

SC,

I can relate in a sense, though this past week I have had a different view. But for the most part naps always make my DP worse than it was before I fell asleep. I would say that 75% of the times I took naps it wasn't necessarily cause I was tired, but more that my DP was so bad, I wanted to "escape" for a little bit. But, that escape was kinna like drinking, it felt good while I was sleeping, but once I woke up I have trouble knowing what time it is, sometimes how I fell asleep and seem 3 times more disoriented then before the nap.
Now, this week has been a tad different. Each day so far this week, I have come home from work and taken an hour nap. Woke up, felt a little disoriented for a few minutes, but then eat dinner and feel energized to go work out. Of course, I have trouble getting to sleep at night when I go to bed, but the nap after work feels so good.
But yes, I agree that DP and sleep go hand in hand one way or another!
Take care.

SC. I have wondered about sleeps relationship as well, but in the opposite. Sleep, and especially naps knock out any dr/p state I am in. Long sleep keeps me fine after wake up for along time, naps are good for a half hour after wake up till symptoms return. Sleep and beer are the only things that are tried and true and I can always count on.

But if I nap and can't wake up, or am slow to wake up, or dream while napping, I will be a zombie for hours. I think this is true for
normal folks.

I do not write to negate your experience, but to only agree that sleep has a relationship somehow with all this. After all, the first test they give in a classic work up is a sleep depreivation eeg, right?

I take my famous 5 o'clock nap pretty much every day. I usually find I can get rid of really bad DP/DR after falling asleep as well as feeling more refreshed. Occasionally, I have a bad nap though and wake up more disoriented and DPed but that is rare.
