My son was born with Hirshsprungs, long story short, he had his large intestine removed when he was a baby. He has always had gut issues and until he was in his teens, we did not realize that this could effect the brain. He started displaying serious symptoms, vertigo, occasional fainting, a sense that things seemed unreal, visual snow, high anxiety, visual trails, too many symptoms to list. After seeing three Neurologists, a Heart doctor, Internist, Ear specialist, the majority thought he had a migraine variant. He tried Effexor, but after reading about how it worked, and reading what it would be like long term, he weened himself off, and after researching his symptoms, felt that he had a definite Seratonin/Dopamine imbalance.

He is going to have a Neurotransmitter test to confirm, and if it is positive, he wants to take 5-HTP. I think these forums are helpful. We all learn from each other. I will keep you posted. I hope this helps someone. Interesting to see how many people that have gut issues (malabsorbtion) also have serotonin deficiency.
