Hi,

Last week I went to the NEW specialised dp/dr doctor. WOUHOU I had real faith in him. Janine told me before not to have too much faith, but hey, he was specialised in dp/dr.

After waiting 1 hour in a psych ward, with weirdo people around me, I was feeling so anxious I thought I would crie or die right away. I felt really crazy. When I finally saw him, he was distant, not warm at all. I entered his office and he kept doing things on his computer. He repeated what I wrote in his questionnaire, about dp/dr. He almost didn't looked at me when I was speaking. Weird for a doc! He gave me a questionnaire about childwood abuse, a silly one (for childs, it seems!) and of course, I answered no to almost all of his questions.

After a long time where I felt I talked to a wall, really, I finally told him I tought it was dp or it looks also like TLE. He looked at me and said that that is his diagnosis : dp OR TLE. He thought that because of my symptoms (feeling like I just missed some hours, time), it felt like epilepsy more than a psychiatric condition. I was astounished. I told him about depression, but he didn't want to talk about it. He said that for him, it was more TLE, and to know really if it's TLE, you have to make 2 kinds of tests, one with something that goes from your nose to your ears (argh) or a surgery, where they literally enter something in your brain, to see electrical activity of the part under your brain that activates TLE. I looked at him very surprised, and he said that for now they TRY meds, to see if it can be TLE. That why he gave me an anti-convulsivant, and told me to try it (w/o blood tests of anything! Just, bang!) and see. I tried to tell him other things, about my delivery, he never cared.

For him, it was physical, not psychological, and didn't want to follow me, because it was physical. I told him about my despair and depression, and he said that TLE can do this.

I ended up with a prescription, a goodbye, and I must return to see my old psychiatrist, because he can't follow me.

I was deceived by his attitude. I thought that maybe, we could do other neurological tests before, you know! It seems it can be many things...

Since then, I have trouble to sleep, I always have this on my mind. On the w/e I had another real confusion/disorientation episode, where I just lost it 2 seconds. I woke up wondering where I was. I did it to me some days, when I changed benzos. But I hate that!

Now I am only with Klono. And I just wonder, if I had epilepsy, why Klono (anti-epileptic) never never helped my dp/dr condition, and at higher doses, I just felt more confused and away?

That was my journey.

(BTW I was Sam3456, I am now under my real nickname, Allure30, sorry for the multiple personalities! :) )

i think i could have TLE too because i lose track of time and hours, but i never remember having a seizure or anything. i saw a neurologist and there going to do an mri and some electrical conduction test where they test nerves. i don't know anymore i just want an answer. my neuro said it prolly isn't anything to do with the brain so i don't know if i have TLE, but i so have that lost track of time and hours all the time and not knowing where i wen't or how i got there. i just want to get back to normal. ya know.

This is all only my opinion and im certainly no doctor, but I dont believe you have TLE. I think like most here you suffer from severe depression and anxiety(extremely low serotonin). Klonopin helps with the anxiety but ultimately it slows serotonin output and makes your condition worse. You need to get off the benzos and take a drug or supplement that will hopefully bring your serotonin levels up. It may take months of a worsened condition but I believe you will eventually get better.

Dear Karine,
The test the doctor recommended was an older test that we dont do in the United States anymore. Its actually almost as good as a 24hr. EEG. Its called an EEG with a nasal-pharangeal (sure I spelled that wrong) lead. Its not painful, just uncomfortable, and its incredibly accurate. It gets leads which can pick up brain activity in the sinuses right below the brain and temporal lobe. I'd get it. And I'd try an anticonvulsant or an anticonvulsant with antidepressant properties ( You'll be happy to know, Joe, that Lamictal affects serotonin as well as being an anticonvulsant). I'm thinking that since you may still be suffering the effects of post-partum depression. But you've had DP before you ever had a baby, and I think you should give an anticonvulsant a shot. No more doctor shopping. You know the options. You have to take one.
By the way, make sure they check your TSH and free T4 and T3. Some of your symptoms would say thyroid to me, especially your extreme restlessness. And you've had thyroid problems in the past. Might be good to get the levels re-checked. Low normal levels should also be treated.

Dear one,

What you have described here on the board is NOT "missed time". This is precisely why something like dp is SO hard for anyone to get a handle on. All of us at different times have mispoken regarding the EXPERIENCE of these states.

You've told us here that you feel AS IF time has jumped...and I know exactly what you're saying. Someone might be walking into a store and as they walk through the door it FEELS AS IF they have jumped into a new time or into another dimension - it is AS IF there was a "break" in the wall of time and space, and somehow it's like you feel AS IF you are still back at home, or AS IF you jumped somehow from being at home to suddenly being inside the store.

IT IS NOT that you literally were in an unconscious state when you left the house and came to the store. It is not that you literally have no memory of the experience. It's that when you TRY to remember under the mounting anxiety since you felt so bizarre all of a sudden, you feel AS IF you can't remember...but if someone was with you and they describe the car ride over here, etc. you will say "oh, right..okay, yes.." and you will remember.

Telling a doctor that you have "lost time" makes them believe you literally have amnesia experiences. Granted, the doctor should have known to ask these questions and really hone in on what you experience rather than just believe you - but very few will bother.

The experience we have is AF IF, and it is very very important to be totally accurate when you talk about the dp states. If the doc thinks you are saying you LITERALLY lose time, that it LITERALLY is that you wake up someplace and have no idea how you got there, they will diagnose you entirely diffferently. To us, IT FEELS AS IF we don't know how we arrived somewhere, but it is a CRUCIAL distinction.

Peace,
Janine

I actually agree with Janine here. I think alot of your descriptions are based upon what you read of multiple personality disorder and dissociative fugues. My assessment is just based on your DP symptoms. I dont, in fact, beleive that you are losing hours or even minutes of your day. Its just a foggy "jamais vu" feeling.

Hi,

Thanks Janine and HS for your comments. I tried, I swear, to say that AS IF things, to the new doctor. Maybe he didn't liscened to me enough.

I said it all to my old psy, he didn't say a lot. He thinks that yes, we COULD try others EEG to see if it's TLE, he said to me that I don't miss time, really, and TLE seems rare. But I HAVE to find the nuerologist, so.... :(

For now, he wants me to stabilize on a AD, then maybe add Lamictal. But he didn't say much thing when I talked to him about all anticonvulsivants.

So I have a AD prescription. And we'll see if I can tough Lamictal after!?!?

Thanks,

Allure
