Med question :

Can we combine Anafranil 10 mg WITH paxil 20 mg let's say without problems? Is it hasardous for the health? I will check with my doctor but want to check with you too.

Thanks

Nobody here can answer your question. I dont believe doctors can either. Psychiatric drugs are completely misunderstood. Their mechanism is not known. Its all only theories. All you can do is cross your fingers.

Oh, Man, I'm not here, LOL, but I have to say something.

Cynthia I know you are concerned about meds, but you can only get so much information from an internet forum.

Though the mechanism of psychiatric drugs is not clearly understood, this is very important:

A good M.D. psychiatrist should know, or should look up in his/her PDR (Physicians' Drug Reference) book, or consult many other medication resources, as COMBINATIONS can be very positive or very negative.

Even certain "herbal remedies" are still drugs. The molecular configuration of many drugs on the market today are based on substances that exist in nature. NEVER COMBINE medications or Rx meds with herbal supplements -- like St. John's Wort -- without a doctor's consultation. NEVER.

None of us here are doctors. And there are some stupid doctors out there, but I have worked with some excellent psychiatrists (I've been lucky) who know what meds do, and what combinations are dangerous.

Please discuss these things with your doctor.

We can give you our EXPERIENCES, but that doesn't mean you will have the same experience, positive or negative. And again, none of us are diagnosticians or medical professionals.

Take Care,

P.S.
My DBT program is great, and I've only started the first "class" -- well we do have homework! The influence of Buddhist teachings on this clinical approach to a CBT-like program are amazing. So simple and yet very helpful in helping control emotions, anxiety, etc. It takes work. I haven't had any "results" yet, but I feel the group setting is VERY important as it is an extra incentive to keep motivated.

There is no human being that completely understands the brain or how drugs impact it. If they say they do then they are a liar. Like I said, its all theories. They simply take a shot in dark and when things go horribly wrong they blame the patient. Who is going to believe somebody thats mentally ill.

You should probably ask your primary care physician. Make sure you go on the record. You can also ask your pharmacist. Pharmacists usually have a pretty thorough background in Chemistry.

Ok OK I understand.

Sorry for my question.

Cynthia
Dear Cynthia,
No need to apologize. My point is simply that only a trained M.D. would know what combination of drugs is safe. What I meant was for instance, you should never take an MAOI and an SSRI at the same time. The combination can be deadly.

An Emergency Room doctors do blood screenings to be certain that ANY drug a patient is taking doesn't interact in a dangerous way with any emergency drug.

My emphasis here is on if a combination is safe or not.

If you don't feel comfortable with your doctor's knowledge in this, yes, seek out another opinion. And agreed, forgot who said this, but often a General Practitioner will know this. My gynecologist in Los Angeles knew to tell me that the anti-convulsants I am taking (Lamictal, Klonopin) affect the potency of birth control pills! In other words, my meds would lessen the effectiveness of a birth control pill, and I could get pregnant ON The Pill.

I thought this is what you were asking. No lecture here, forgive me.

Drug combos -- good doctors know this information. And I've also seen excellent doctors go to a PDR to double check if they weren't certain. As a matter of fact my GP wasn't sure if an antibiotic he wanted to put me on would be less effective in combo with the meds I'm on.... so he looked it up while I was in the office.

You're asking good questions. But the safety of a combination in the sense of your overall health is up to a good doctor to decide.

If you don't like this doctor, please find another.

Take Care,
You'll get this figured out, it takes time.
