I am new to this site and am wondering how the conclusion of MJ being the direct cause for DP/DR. Have a doctor or scientist confirmed this and where are the studies , the reason i ask is I have this symptom and have always been told it was the result of anxiety and panic, I used MJ only breifly 25 years ago. If this can contribute to the cause how is this scientifically possible to continue with the symptom. Also my mom who was a panic sufferer had this symptom and trust me she never smoked. Is there a cure?

ok i have been diagnosed with panic disorder 20 years ago and the main symptom was the derealization feeling. all the physical testing said everything was fine. my psychologist and psych said this symptom and the others such as heart racing ,weakness, dizziness etc.. are all anxiety symptoms so for the last twenty years i still from time to time experience this derealization feeling and it can last days. i did smoke MJ years prior to my first panic attack only a hand full of times and had one bad experience which caused me to never try MJ again, felt like i smoked to much and got too high.keep in mind there were some terrible trauma leading up to my first panic attack. long relationship with spouse ended, grandmother died, father divorced my mother and i had a bad auto accident. So my question is did that handfull of times smoking create this feeling that has come and gone for all these years or am i just another panic/ anxiety suffer who when gets anxious cause this derealization feeling?i have never heard drug related DP/DR from any of the doctors i saw all these years.I would appreciate any help.

I don't think they know for sure, but if you only have anxiety and panic from time to time and are normal and feeling well the rest of the time, there probably wasn't any permanent damage caused by the MJ.

Does that help answer your question? Remember, I'm not a doctor! Maybe you could ask your doctor this question sometime?

It's very simple. Anything, be it drugs, trauma, anything, which causes great anxiety can cause DR/DP. Absolutely anything. Drinking too much water could. DR/DP is our minds 'self-defence' mechanism, which is fine(ish) in the short term - it protects us from shock, but in the long term it becomes a problem, of course.

My first DR/DP experience was directly caused by weed. I had a massive panic attack and, hey presto - DR/DP. Second time (four years late), it was 'e'.

If you had a look in the hospitals in Ibiza over the summer, you'd realise just how many people are suffering from DR/DP because of over-induglence in drugs.

Anyway who says that certain drugs cannot cause DR/DP or any psychiatric problem are talking out of their arses, so don't listen to them.
