im not knowledgable at all when it comes to drugs but today i was watching a tv programme about drugs and its effects...the guy on there said that ketamine gives you a feeling of being detached from your body...now im just wondering if this is the case what effect does ketamine have on the brain to cause this detachment (dp)

Any ego assaulting drug be it LSD, weed, amphetamine and even some legal ones can cause detachment. The DP is just a natural consequence of ingesting drugs, if one is prone to the detachment factor.

I do not have any of the neuroscience to back me up, we need HOmekooled for that!

But I do know that NO ONE on this board should EVER use Ketamine..it does induce dp states - that is a given. It used to be used (in very small portions) in some anathesias....it's a disaster to anyone prone to dissociation.

I'm sure Monkeydust is right in that the large ingestion of K would produce a major trance state - but I also know that in "coming out of" that deep state, dp and dr are very very common.

In fact, I strongly advise ANYone who ever undergoes surgery, etc. to tell the doctor and the anesthesiologist that you are prone to dissociative states and must NOT have ANYTHING remotely similar to ketamine. I did that myself when under the knife awhile back - the medical staff totally understood me.

Other than that, I can't explain the specifics of WHY K is so horrific to us.

Here's a trip report I saw the other day

I snorted it and felt quite normal for about 5 minutes, then i could feel it coming, at that point I remember laying down...

This then proceeded to some crazed plain of perception where I had absolutely no concept of anything or anyone around me. I literally went back into my head and my brain started projecting images into my eyes..

The trip consisted of me searching my mind for the beginning of my life. That's how it felt. The images kept folding me back to certain points of understanding of my own existence and i felt this overwhelmingly liberating feeling that I had discovered the meaning of my life, which I now don't remember.

For those who have seen the film 'Labyrinth' there is a part in it where she is running around this maze with upside down stairs. I was fucking there people! Running up the stars then falling back into these big wholes and then running around them again looking for the beginning of my life so it could explain something to me...I never found it, and I can't remember what this revelation was, but I know it was indeed a revelation...

If something like that is not going to induce a worse DP state, I don't know what will.

Hope I didn't have ketamine with my cesarian..... I know I had a vaccine, epidural, anesthesia, Versed.... maybe some med was LIKE ketamine to me.....

But I'll never know for real. I just know that the psychologist specialised in Dp that I will see say that ketamine produces Dp states, so if they gave me that, it can trigger Dp, and Lamictal reverses this process..

But Lamictal gives me bad nausea.... ARgh (bis bis bis) What would you do to my place? Throw up all the time or try something else?

C xxx (Lamictal 5mg for now, and doing fine with my stomach).

Mt. Sinai is experimenting with a drug that has the opposite effects on the brain that K does, Seromycin an NMDA receptor agonist. DP is actually exactly like a ketamine trip. I have friends, PhD neuroscience students at NYU who use K a lot as their only "safe" party drug, and intentionally to get the out-of-body, spiritual experience. so again, one must be prone to dissociation first, cuz none of them are DP'ed.

as for the science....Ketamine blocks glutamate activity, giving rise to either entire cell bank shutdown in some brain areas or changes in the way cell clusters integrate or interpret incoming data in others. Overall, the result is the much famed K-Hole effect: certain brain parts go into temporary hibernation, mainly the senses and physical sensations, while others - imagination, and other unnamed perceptions from the depths of the mind - are amplified.

my cat was pumped full of K two weeks ago, i wonder if he's DP'ed now

Ketamine is a very, very, powerful tranquilizer. It is used semi-routinely in acute medical emergencies where there is severe pain and trauma. In some people, in can make you trip like on acid, with others the experience is similar to heroin or morphine. It's also used to tranquilize horses. Vet's use it a lot because, well, who gives a shit if a rhino goes on a trip.

I took 1 ketamine pill during my drugs days. I hated it. I felt extremely sick, extremely disorientated, faint, with the strange sensation that my arms and legs had bloated to 10x their normal size. I then slept for about a week. Not my idea of a good time.

I beleive that Ketamine actually increases the available amounts of glutamine, as well as glutamate, glycine, and aspartate, among others. I was just reading a study done on Ketamine "victims". Some pretty bad stuff. In any event, this is why Lamictal was tried, because it limits glutamine activity, which would seem to counter any experience Ketamine-like. Or that, at least, is how the argument goes.
