Hi, I have never been diangosed for depersonalization, but suffer of the symptoms(chronic, 24 hours a day) for a decade. I have another condition which is auto-immune, it isn't important for the discussion here to say which one. What is interesting is that the past months my depersonalization has lessened since I took Purinethol, an immunosupressor. Or it is that, or the fish oils I am taking, but I dought it since my sister that as well has the symptoms as well takes fish oil, and she report no effect at all.

If it is in fact the Purinethol the cause, maybe depersonalization in many cases could be an auto-immune disorder.

Oh and I would like as well to know which medication has helped people here, because this depersonalization is really disturbing my sister.

I am also, as most of us are, interested in any medication trials and results. As far as I know, nothing has been shown to be particularly effecive with primary DP, but various things help with concurrent anxiety and depression, which may, perhaps make the DP more accessable to some kind of treatment. (Of course I am in no way any kind of authority on these things.)

Since a pharmological treatment (or for that matter, a cause) for DP is unknown, any clues are valuable. Who knows where a breakthrough will come from, and the Purinethol/auto-immune connection could very well be an important piece of data.

I remember some positive things on these boards (BC--before the crash) about Omega 3 fatty acids. The fish oil thing is interesting to me for a few reasons.

My DP seems to be related to THC. One of the natural chemicals in the brain (endogenous ligand) that uses the same receptors (usually called cannibanoid receptors) through which the effects of THC are mediated is anandamide. Anandamide has been implicated in the storing and extinguishing of aversive memories (the trauma/drug connection.) Amamdamide is itself a fatty acid. Omega 3 and other fatty acids also (I believe, although I may have gotten this wrong) have something to do with increasing cell permeability, and it is at least possible that this may beneficially effect the functionality of these cannibinoid receptors.

This is another of my (probably) crackpot and uneducated theories that I started to research and then kind of gave up on.

Also, a cartoon in last weeks New Yorker (October 4, 2004):

Interesting.

One other thing, has anyone trying high concerntration of O2 inhalated? Few years ago, I was doing an experiment with 40% H2O2... in the reaction O2 were released in a considerable amount, I've felt so well for a moment, I fealed being more "there"(at that time I didn't knew anything about depersonalization as a condition even if I had the symptoms).

I always noticed that my DP was related to my breathing, seems funny but so true.

That could answer the reason why we are so succeptible to weather changes, 'caus the air is different depending on the weather.
And while doing sports, I get very severe DP/DR, 'caus I'm breathing too fast, but after the sport session, I feel better than before it, breathing more easily.

I beleive DP/DR is a psycho-physical condition and each of us have differents cures, fish oil may work for some but not for others.
My solution to my DP/DR was a no sugar diet, relaxation sessions and daily sports (moderate) and a regular 8 hrs of sleep each night.
Finding my body's pace was all I needed.

the fatty acids in cold-water fish have proven to increase functionality of serotonin receptors, I read an article about that a few weeks ago
So it may work on more receptors.
My DP is also THC related and I started paxil together with fish oil about 2,5 months ago, and it's actually doing wonders. Don't know what helps more, but I can definatly say my concentration has increased a lot since I take the Omega 3.
