In 2007 I was cursed with derealization, but it gradually got better and I dealt with it. 15 months ago, I got the flu and it got worse. Like a lot worse to the point where functioning has become a total obstacle. Nevermind how weird going to college was.

I was resisting medication because I don't want to rely on medication to function, but I can't go on like this. This isn't living, this is existing in a completely numbed down state with the added mind f'ery feeling like im in a fish bowl having short term memory, and all the other symptoms that come along with this.

The worst part? I went to nursing school, but I don't feel like I can be a nurse with this.

Some questions: What can I expect when going to my Dr. about this? Will they likely refer me to a psychiatrist, and what medications would I expect to be put on (I know SSRI's are a biggie with this)

Im also worried because DR isn't a very known condition in the medical community and i'm afraid this is going to be a shot in the dark. I just want some help, some improvement, anything.

Hi there, first of all Welcome to the forum! Well done for being able to manage it for that long especially without medication ! If I may ask , how did you get derealization at the first place ? I got mine from a panic attack caused by weed and it's only derealization, no depersonalization or emotional numbness. I got better with time and meds ( A combo of SSRI and anti-psychotic ) but they come with some small side effects ( like visual snow, which is fine for me ). I almost felt cured while I was on them so I decided to stop taking the meds however it returned after a while so I'm considering taking back the meds. They could help...
