It's like if you've been blind your whole life and that's all you've known, you don't know what sight feels like, but you know it's there, cause others say it is. But then if you've been able to see, then some accident causes you to go blind-- you know what sight is, you know it's out there, but after some time you forget what it feels like. You have a new reality. But you're also aware that others have something you don't.

I don't know. I just don't think I'd recognize reality if it bit me on my behind. I hear about it, and read it exists, but it always feels out of reach.

It's so sick but this DP/DR stuff is soooo hard to explain sometimes. Sometimes I think I'm just doing it to myself, and I choose to feel this way... And other times I know I don't because who the heck would want to feel like this.

Almost like, I was so afraid of this DP/DR would become my new reality that it ended coming my new reality.

Boy.....

It's hardly surprising that, after an age of chronic DP, that you begin to entertain thoughts that either:

a.) You'll never return to reality,

or

b.) Reality doesn't exist.

or

c.) You'll forget what reality is.

I've had DR/DP and had these exact same thoughts, and recovered, and let me assure you that reality is out there outside your head. Please don't be scared....remember, DR/DP is NOT your natural state, so reality will return when you recover. Like riding a bike, you never forget it, however long it's been since you've tasted it. And when you recover, you won't find reality to be strange, because as I've said, prior to DR/DP, it was your normal state - your natural frame of mind.

Martinelv,

Perhaps if oneday I recover, It will be like riding a bike. Hopefully it will be. I hear it is. So, I guess it must be true.

When you recovered, how did it FEEL? How do you know you're suddenly changed?

Reality is that we have a disorder.

Our sense of reality is just changed, however our goal is to change it back to what it once felt like. Is that what we truely want though? Or do we just want to be happy. I mean, happiness is really all that matters in life, right? If you can stay happy what really matters....

I think the focus should be mainting a positive attitude rather than let this disorder get us down.

It seems to me when im in a good mood i dont even think about this DP, and when im anxious/depressed its when its at its worst.

Maybe positive attitudes are the key to unlocking the recovery secret?

^ I agree! This can relate to anyone, but I think that once I start doing better in my career and find a new girlfriend I'll start to feel better about life and as long as I stay busy.

A big part of it is staying busy, and being sucessful at what youre staying busy with.

At least that's what I think will help me get better. Dont know about the rest of you.

It's all the same and different for all of us. I know that sounds weird but, it makes sense to me.

Almost like when you dont like youre present reality, this disorder is a way for your mind to deal with it. In a way we need to make ourselves happy with our reality in order to start to enjoy it.

Does that make any sense?

It does make sense....

Maybe this disorder is a coping mechanism our brain learned in order to avoid negative feelings (when infact its more like avoiding feelings and everything that causes feelings [reality/life] in general)

So instead of being depressed, maybe we go into wonderland?

I dunno.... just speculation
