Hey ! I have DR ( as we all have ) since 10 months and it was quite easy to handle. The feeling of dreaming and the veil over the eyes were little by little diseapearing. I was very hopeful that this will go away one day and it was getting better and better months after months... until december 2022.

In december 2022, i developped tinnitus and hyperacusis in a whole afternoon when nothing justified it: no sound shock etc. Thanks God the tinnitus has largely disapeared but the hyperacusis remains as the feeling of DR is growin up again... I'm verry stressed and anxious by nature. Obviously, the symptoms are getting worse when i feel anxious. I eat well (no gluten, no sugar, only 2 meals a day...), i often fast, i do sport, i keep my mind busy, i go out, i stay with my family etc but im very afraid about this hyperacusis that produces me many symptoms in the ear (heat, ackes,clacking..). At some moments i have no hyperacusis, go figure... I know i should make some diagnostics, especially of the vestibular system or the inner ear but where i live (France) , the medical system is completely collapsing and it takes you like 6 months to have a simple appointment with a doctor so you have to act yourself.

The question is : are so people here dealing with tinnitus and hyperacusis as well as a feeling of vertigo and if so, is DR/DP really responsible of those symptoms ? Have you healed and how? Thanks a lot

Hey ZkW, sorry to hear about your tinnitus and hyperacusis. Having had tinnitus for 2 years and having friends with hyperacusis, I feel your pain.
I think tinnitus can be a side effect of DP/DR and seems to be very common among people with DP/DR. But I'm not sure about hyperacusis - I guess it's a side effect of tinnitus and therefore indirectly a symptom of DP/DR? Dunno, but all you can really do is try and fix what you have.

Definitely get yourself to an ENT. I don't know how you'd go about that. You might consider private care if it's a thing in france, expensive but hopefully quicker. I wouldn't bother with a GP, they just refer you to an ENT anyway. An ENT can't do much for tinnitus but because of the hyperacusis and vertigo you want to have your ears checked.

Tinnitus and hyperacusis can also be caused by medication, drugs, vaccines, illnesses, etc, so maybe one of those things explains why you got it. But some people just get it with no cause at all.

Make sure you protect your ears - just because noise didn't cause your tinnitus doesn't mean it can't worsen it. Turn the headphones down. Don't go to loud bars or concerts without properly inserted hearing protection. Check any medications and supplements you take for "ototoxicity", anything ototoxic can make tinnitus worse. Best of luck.

Hi man thanks a lot for your answer !

What do you call an ENT ? If it is a doctor that is specialized in hearing problems, i already saw two of them ; they made me an auditory check ( no hearing loss, perfect hearing) and told me that there is nothing to do except to see a psy to "accept the symptoms". Then you take out the credit card, pay and they give you the rope to end your life and to the next one lol anyways..
I tried many many things and the hyperacusis is much more bearable than a month ago, it is just very boring.

Regarding what you said about hyperacusis and tinnitus linked with DP/DR, i think like you that tinnitus is side effect of DP.RP but not hyperacusis... I actually always had this feeling of blocked ear and my eustachian tube is probably malfunctionning (since i was a boy, i always had stuffy nose and many ear infections). I never paid attention to this and thought it was normal but it is not... I should have cared before..

I might be strange for you to hear this but i maybe have a solution for your tinnitus. Mine decreased so much after this that i think everyone should try. Im speaking you about fasting. After a week of fast (only drink water, no food at all nor tea or coffee), my tinnitus has almost disappeared and continues to disappear little by little. Fasting enables your body to recover itself. It is a real miracle and perhaps you havent tried it before. Regarding DP/DR, it was gone after the fasting but it reappeared a little. Now im practicing intermittent fasting and i feel like i revive. Only this f*cking hyperacusis bothers me ..

ENT is ear nose throat dr. It does sound like something they would handle. You may need a second opinion.

An ENT is an ear, nose, and throat doctor - also called an Otolaryngologist. Sounds like your experience with them was about the same as mine - there's no cure, $79 please. My ENT was an old guy who has tinnitus himself, and he told me that all that psychological stuff is just being told to live with it, so if you can do that on your own then you'll save yourself some money. I believe him - CBT for tinnitus is famously garbage.

Fasting is a good suggestion. Amazing that your DP/DR fully went away after fasting. I will try a 7 day water fast at some point also. Which type of intermittent fasting are you doing and how has it affected your DP/DR?

I assume you've had your ears examined - you should do something about your stuffy nose, blocked ears, and eustachian tube problems. In my case I think allergies are a big reason why I am getting this.

Hyperacusis is definitely boring, but weirdly what helped me in the earlier days of tinnitus was reading up a lot about hearing protection. I am basically an expert in all types of hearing protection now, and it's valuable knowledge to me. It actually helped me ignore my tinnitus a lot. I recommend you do at least some reading, it might help.
