The work day is very tough for me. I have derealization all day at work, its really bad. I am dizzy, can't think right, everything is blurry and foggy looking, especially at night with the fluorescent lights on. :( I think its a secondary symptom of my social anxiety disorder, I get really anxious and nervous when I am in certain social situations.

How do you guys deal with this at the work place?

I sleep walk through most of my working days. I complete the bare requirements in order to meet my employer's expectations and nothing more. Personally I think the phenomenon is caused by the internalization of focus leaving me incapable of free thought and blind to events happening in my environment. I'm always surprised and bewildered by what I have missed and I always seem to be left with a feeling of never quite being up-to-speed with things.

I work in a fast food place so the work is really easy, just physical. If I'm feeling really out of it I just try to ignore it and continue with what I'm doing. Mostly I can still be thinking about whatever I want (including bizarre or really negative thoughts) and still be doing my job well.

when i was going through the most severe dp/dr, i was a waitress at the olive garden. i would get the time frame gaps and the works. i basically got fired for being really spacey. i then started working at starbucks and it was much easier. starbucks has dim lighting and you pretty much stay in a contained area for the whole time. it was a MUCH better place to work...if it was slow, i could just do dishes or whatever and not even have to help customers.

i am a teacher now, and still have flashes of dp/dr and it is really hard to deal with. i sometimes have to just show the kids videos or have them do projects because i know there is no way i will be able to teach. other times (like today :) ) that i'm totally fine and "with-it".

AgentCooper...is that you in your avatar?
Also, I can't fathom how you are able to be a teacher. My Mom is a teacher and I CANNOT imagine being DPed and have to teach in front of people. Probably because my voice feels disconnected and it feels super strange to talk.

Lately, my DP has been really bad at work. My boss knows I deal with some mental issues, but he thinks its just depression. One of the hardest things about having DP is trying to work and live your life like nothing is wrong, because it is soooo hard to explain to others. It really sucks!

Take care,

Kelson

thanks! :D

my dp/dr was a result of taking allegra d and birth control pills (i think). after about 8 months of severe dp/dr it started getting milder and milder until it went away totally. but in the last year it has been coming back...i think from hormone spikes...
