my dad took my blood pressure today with one of those electronic machines...the last time i had my blood pressure taken (a year ago) it was fine... they give you an example of two readings

one reading being-healthy and the other one (over 140 i think) being a danger due to hypertension

well my first reading was around 146,then i took the test again and it was 140 x some another number which escapes me...my only concern was the fact that im suffering from a very bad cold and im feeling very anxious today would this effect my reading or have i indeed got a problem...im not going to goto the doctors but im a little concerned...and i have put on a stone in a short space of time

all the best

I would be happy if by BP was 146. That is really not very high at all. For instance the last time I had mine taken at the doctors it was 170/84 and thats with HBP meds. If I take it myself at home it is usually below 150. (depending on the time of the day and what is going on)
While ideally 146 is mildly elevated (if it stayed consistently there) it is certainly not something to be anxious about. If you lose a few pounds it would probably drop down into a more ideal range. Also your BP readins can vary dramatically even over the passing of a few minutes. Often I will take my BP at home and the first reading will be 20 or 30 points higher than my second or third readings. It is important to wait at least three minutes between each reading BTW.

Also those electronic machines are notorious for being inaccurate.

I forgot to mention that ones age can make a difference. For instance I don't know your age but I seem to recall that you are relatively young like in your twenties. If that iis the case then you might want to try different ways to try and lower your BP without resorting to meds. Still you have no need to worry, just check it now and then when you feel relaxed as anxiety can give you an artificailly elevated reading, and on the other hand you can't will your BP to be lower than it actually is but apphrension can certainly cause it to be artificially elevated that is why taking it three times is important. I generally record the average of the three readings.

good luck
