A quick poll to try and gauge whether anti depressant use might be beneficial in the relief of some of the symptoms brought on by anxiety and depersonalization.

I'm most interested in the reduction of the following symptoms:

  • 'Foggy brain'
    Lack of concentration and memory
    Depression and anxiety
Reduction of detachment and introspective thought
Thanks guys!

I have been on Remeron (mirtazapine) 30 mg now since 2001. It took about a month for the full effect and the medication lifted me altogether from severe depression, which I had suffered for 12 years' time. However, Remeron hasn't had any effect on my DP/DR, but I don't care as even the lack of depression feels wonderful. :D

I've been on 10mg of Aropax (Paroxetine) for the last 8 months.
That's not even a theraputic dose as far as anti-depressant treatment goes. However it has helped enormously with alleviating my anxiety and therefore improved the severity of my DP/DR.
Thank god!

I took paxil for over a year and it was an acid trip pretty much the whole way through until I quit and got my brain back. Now I wouldn't touch an anti depressant with a 10 foot pole. Some people are fortunate enough to get the "miracle drug" effect from those drugs, but I certainly wasn't one of them. I pretty much got the "this drug is killing me and its time to file a lawsuit" effect from the SSRI's.

My psychiatrist had to try an unusual approach with me. Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, and all the other meds like that make my dp worst. I become extremely "robot like". I am taking Wellbutrin and Zanax. It seems to be a good combo for me. Of course they were hoping that the Wellbutrin would help me quit smoking as an extra benefit, but that has not been the case since I smoke just as much if not more than I always have.

My primary symptom has always been anxiety and panic, which led to DR (not DP). The DR faded away on it's own, pre-medication, over about a year.

Here's a list of all the shit I've taken over the years for anxiety and panic. I've never really suffered from depression:

Anafranil - 1 tablet, terrible side effects. Stopped immediately.

Cipramil (Celexa) - No side effects, possible dampening down of anxiety. Pretty rough withdrawal.

Respiridone (Restoril - a goddam anti-psychotic) - Nasty side effects, no effects on anxiety. Walking zombie. No withdrawal symptoms.

Effexor (Venflaxatine) - No side effects, slight lightening of mood, definate (but mild) dampening of anxiety....haven't had a panic attack in two months.

Diazepam/Oxazepam/Lorazepam - The only thing that totally cured my anxiety and panic - totally and utterly. Only temporarily of course. Strangely, although I've intermittently used fairly hefty doses over the past four years, no withdrawal at all.

Propanalol (Beta-blocker) - Possible, very slight dampening of anxiety. No withdrawal.

Valerian (Herbal anti-anxiety) - No side effects, absolutely no effect on anxiety, even on mega-ultra high doses. No withdrawal

Chinese Herbal Medication for anxiety. - No side effects, absolutely no effect on anxiety, even on mega-ultra high does. No withdrawal.

I checked never been on an AD because at the time I hadn't been. I have recently begun St. John's Wort and noticed that most of my DPDR symptoms have either mellowed out or have left completely.
