Please don't think I'm bananas sp! but in many ways this is Buddhist thought. One doesn't have to meditate and say "Om" all day to accomplish this.
I highly recommend a VERY sane book that deals with the fact that Life is Pain, but we CHOOSE TO SUFFER. We compare ourselves with others, etc. Some of the things you've said.
All we need to do is be our "Personal Best" ... no competition with anyone else, or their expectations. This is a very simplistic interpretation of Buddhist thought (and no Buddhism isn't theistic, Buddha was merely a teacher, not a God).
I recommend the book Buddhism Without Beliefs: A Contemporary Guide to Awakening by Stephen Batchelor.
VERY easy reading. VERY sane. VERY applicable to all of us.
Simplicity. Sanity.
It has helped me quite a bit. I took DBT, a version of CBT, based on Buddhist teachings, at University of Michigan! Taught by ACSWs... no nonsense. It's legit. I swear. It might be helpful for others here.
