So I've had DPDR for about 8 years now, and recently I've been noticing my extremely poor short term memory. I've known its been bad all this time, but I'm starting to obsess about it now and its rather annoying. I frequently forget to do things, or forget what I am doing in the short term, but then remember it clearly minutes afterwards. I usually walk into a room and have to wait a bit till I remember why I entered it in the first place and eventually it comes to me. I can't remember(haha) if my memory was any good before DPDR, but I was wondering if anyone knows if Depersonalization has anything to do with it? Is it a contributing factor, or do I just have poor memory?

Thanks!

I've had DP/DR for a little over a month and I've noticed that my short term memory is absolute shit. It's pretty annoying and it makes me feel stupid at times but I don't freak out over it because I realize it's just part of the condition. But rest assured once your DP/DR and anxiety go away, your normal cognitive functions go back to normal. Poor concentration, short term memory loss, loss of focus, all of that is a result of anxiety, once your anxiety goes away your concentration comes back. Just don't worry about it because it'll only prolong your anxiety and therefore you'll never get over your difficulty remembering stuff.

Its poor concentration not poor memory....

We find it very hard to focus on several things at once (because DP thinking is so dominating) and as a result feel like weve totally forgotten what we were doing or where we were....

DP takes away multitasking abilities and bcause of this it fecks up our concentration levels...

It only FEELS like our memory is damaged...Later when we think about stuff weve been doing earlier it usually can be recalled...Of course as obsessive DP sufferers we take this and run with it and start diagnosing ourselves with Dementia etc...

@eddy- Are you saying that because we are thinking about DP we forget about other things? I agree though concentration would be a better word for it rather than short term memory, but does DP cause the lack of concentration? Like is that a symptom? Or is it that because we are thinking about it so much it messes with our concentration? Most of the time I have little ability to concentrate even when not thinking about DP.

DP wreaks havoc with concentration levels as a rule....
