for me, when in a state of full blown dp it's not possible to function, existing second by second being virtually unbearable. however as soon as dp has subsided sufficiently to go to work i believe the routine and distraction of work goes a long way to help in recovering further, as it is at this stage that my mind starts to try and make sense of what just happened and therefore the danger of obsessively self monitoring comes into play.
I've had two full blown dp episodes(the first being mre intense) and have been able on both occasions to drop out for a bit unnoticed, the first time i took time out of university and the second happened to coincide with the summer holidays so i returned to work as usual, if a stone and a half lighter, after the holidays. The first few weeks returning to work this september were very difficult but i do believe that persevering has helped in recovery.
so my advice would be to give it a go.

best of luck
