I've had dr/dp for six months now. I find that i pretty much NEVER get dr or dp when i'm stoned. i can think about things other then dp when i'm high and infact consider myself "normal" when i'm stoned. Class A drugs such as XTC, coke and speed take my mind off it aswell. The conclusion i came to was that when i get high with friends i'm relaxed thus lowering my anxiety thus lowering the anxiety symptoms which include dp and dr. i reeeeally think that dp and dr are just anxiety symptoms and wanna try the linden method but wanna hear of sucsess first! anyone tried it? does anyone agree with what i'm saying bout getting high lowering anxiety etc.etc. ??

richie,

I think it's a bad idea that you're doing drugs if you suffer from this illness. I understand what you mean by these things relaxing you, but I can't help but think that that's the wrong way to go about relaxing. XTC in particular is notorious for catapulting people into deep depressions and various other mental disorders. Cannibis has the same effect on a lot of people. Coke and Speed perpetuate anxiety as they produce physiological effects which i'm sure you're aware of. They are quite the buzz for most people, but can be quite harmful to those already predisposed to anxiety.

If pot relaxes you, maybe it's okay for you to do it, but be aware of the fact that that drug, as innocuous as it's advocates claim it is, can produce startlingly deleterious psychological effects. If you've been doing it for years and it's done nothing but relax you, then you're probably okay, but just be aware.

I'm not trying to preach on the dangers of doing drugs here. I think people should do whatever the hell they feel like doing. But if you're on this board and looking to rid yourself of DP, my advice is, stop doing these drugs and learn to cope another way.

Good luck,

s.

i very much so appreciate your advice. cannabis has always worked well for me but sometimes i can't help but think that i'm putting my potential recovery back. i'm not always dp/dr so maybe i'm not that affected by it but i'm definately not using class a's anymore. they're just an occasional thing anyway. thanks for your reply[/quote]

Pot and the dissasociative drug DXM caused my chronic dp/dr. I stay away from those. I also stay away from pyschadelics like shrooms/acid because they have the ego dissolving effects. Has anyone with dp/dr tried those?

I still do alot of uppers/downers. Uppers tend to make me shizo when i try to sleep, but i live with it.

Richie, I have to be honest here. I am not trying to tell you what to do because we all have the right to live the way we choose to live, but the drugs are a very serious problem. If this is how you try to cope with dp/dr it is not a good. In time your problems could be alot worse. I know this illness is painful and sometimes we just want to have some relief but drugs is not the answer.

my honest opinion-

if this stuff doesn't hurt you at all, then I PERSONALLY and NOT ON BEHALF OF THIS SITE say go for it. I would personally stay away from doing the XTC and Speed more than every once in a great while, but if you're one of the types that really benefits from pot, by all means great!

As long as you don't feel WORSE after doing said substance, and you're using it occasionally in a social setting with good people, then that is a great time to unwind, focus on others, and most of all stay connected with your friends, something very important for all of us.

Don't confuse yourself more by reading about others drug nightmares, it will only cause you to self monitor.

I say...if the stuff helps you right now, go for it. If you're young and just chilling with close friends who also smoke pot...for fuck's sake be young and smoke some pot!

But remember, this is only if it is beneficial for you and you don't have any bad after effects and you do it occasionally.

I usually would not advise this to people but as some people need Xanax to get through a rough patch and others need Valium, pot could be your thing. And you definitely, above all else, need time to relax and be social. It's crucial.

I will also say, though, two things:

one, everyone's opinion and emotion towards this subject is going to be subjective. Some people find great help in X, while others have had horrible times. same with all other drugs. but people will feel a need to crusade for their cause if a certain drug caused their dp/dr. I'm not saying anyone in this thread has done this but be sure to take some of those posts with a grain of salt.

take mine with a grain of salt too. And a lime

two, no matter what you should be finding ways for self-improvement, being it talking to trusted ones, therapy, getting your educational and vocational goals accomplished, etc. Stay in the game of life. Don't be like this one guy i dated many years ago...oh christ...i hate him so...nevermind. Anyway, he was also a big pothead. But remember I have a personal thing against bigtime potheads. Because pot is not really my thing.

I have never been 100% certain but am pretty sure that recreational drugs caused my severe DP and anxiety.
I say avoid the drugs at all costs.
However, some prescription meds like valium have helped deal with the worst moments of this illness.
