I have been dealing with what I’m almost sure is dpdr for about two years. I really want a diagnosis so I can start finding help and begin recovering, but it’s all a bit scary. What was your diagnosis experience like? How long did it take? What was involved? Thanks :)

Depersonalization is very under-diagnosed and partly unknown by many psychiatrists and often gets misdiagnosed as depression. So, to get a formal diagnosis is very difficult and most don´t get it. There is no formal treatment as it is not fully understood. Most treatments is a combination of antidepressant with lamotrigine or some cognitive approach. Very difficult to come with a prognosis. Some like me have tried everything with no effect while others benefits for the medication or cognitive approach. Here is a video with people who have DP and some former researcher into the condition a the now closed "Depersonalization research unit". There is not one full time researcher working with this condition right now,- globally. There is some small examinations like brain scans and or review of research done by people working with other conditions too. So, there is a growing awareness of the condition.

In the US psych professionals usually want to attribute depersonalization to something else like depression, anxiety, stress, or psychosis. Most physicians like to dismiss and ignore depersonalization because they don't believe subjective problems are part of their domain.
