I apologise if this sounds ignorant but could someone please let me know the difference between a depressed mindset vs a depersonalisation mindset. I’m aware that both conditions can cause mental changes for example, depersonalisation can cause anhedonia but so can depression, so how do you tell the difference.

It’s not that depersonalization isn’t real. But I think it’s a mistake to look at it as it’s own thing. It’s always been a symptom for me of OCD, anxiety or depression. And take a look at the condition of the people here on this forum. Plenty of neurotic shit right, mental problems up the ass? So why do we even separate the various mental health problems from it. Depersonalization is probably the result of severe cases of these issues.

I’ll try answer your question tho. The difference is such a gray area I don’t think it can be understood. For example you could be depressed, have depersonalization, but only be upset about your depression. It’s so subjective and I don’t think it’s worth going into tbh. You can’t just “pin” what a depressed mindset is vs a depersonalized one. It’s just useless to even try. What you are experiencing CANNOT be put into a box.

There are many differences between the two, some symptoms overlap but they are not the same at all. Depression is mostly characterized by a severe low mood, negative thinking and intense emotions or the absence of emotions. Depersonalization is more of a sensation rather than thoughts or "feelings". You are detached from yourself and surroundings, a sensation you can truly feel, things look farther away or closer etc. Those experiences can result in depression or vice versa. In my opinion Depersonalization is the pinnacle of mental issues, when the mind cannot cope anymore, it's the absolute worst what exists it robs you from everything you are. True hell on earth.
