I'm wondering how you know if you have depression or dp/dr? I was anxious/depressed without realizing it for many years, then after a breakdown I started to feel dp:d. I have symptoms of depression, but I don't know if they're dp related or make up an independent illness. I know labels doesn't matter, but I'd rather be depressed with dp as a symptom of it than having a Depersonalization Disorder. But I'm dp:d 24/7 so I guess it's already a disorder..

what you're describing pretty much fits me as well. subtle anxiety/depression for years, then patches of dp, then dp 24/7. My guess is that our dp was gradually increased due to chronic hyperventilation caused by anxiety. it's a very subtle form of overbreathing, causing the release of too much CO2 from the body and in turn depriving your brain (and other organs) of Oxygen. that's one theory on what causes DP.

my depression got worse after I DP'ed 24/7. DP is a symptom of anxiety, not of depression. I don't care for lables either, DP is only a symptom not a disorder! -rula

Well, do you take anything for the depression? My theory is that dp is a disorder when it is accompanied by feelings of dr. I have dp but no dr, and mine was caused by anxiety. The only symptom of dp i have is not knowing who i am. lost sense of self. maybe if the depression clears for you, the dp will as well.

My dp was from ingesting expensive pieces of paper, and putting things up my nose that didn't belong there.

LOL. Yeah, we all started there (almost there). but both of those things make you hyperventilate. do 'em long enough, or worry about that one bad trip long enough, and you mess up your brain's breathing timer.

I do take Zoloft but so far there hasn't been a change. Oh, I didn't realize you could have lost identity as the only symptom; kind of thought if you have one, you have them all.

Weed + Acid + PCP and the movie 'Waking Life' while tripping with a psycho masochist and a christian fundamentalist turned out being a bad idea. That was the beginning of the end of me.
