Does anyone know what psychologists think causes deja vu?
Personally I can't think of one logical explanation for it.
I've been getting such intense deja vu lately. I'm starting to sort of believe that my life has already been lived. It's a little troubling..

I am not sure where the med people are on this now, but years ago with the early research on dp there was discussion of the temporal lobe and its realtionship (possibly) to dp. Deja vu was part of the realtionship they were trying to build between temporal lobe activiy and depersonalization, for many of us dr/dp'ers have had deja vu as do folks with bonifide temporal lobe problems. But I think all humans have deja vu though at some point right? Do we have it more than the general population? I do not know. I know at least one researcher in 1987 (Torch) said this relationship was pure bunk, but I know others are still holding to it. Among other parts of the realtionship were rigid, hypervigalent and obsessive personalities. I used to have deja vu all the time, many times a week, and sometimes it would last a few minutes it seemed. But I have not had it for a very long time. I used to enjoy it actually.

Interesting! In my deep stages of DP/DR I had alot of Deja Vu. It started to make me think I was some super human or something, cause there should be no reason why I'm going through all this stuff and not get some type of super power for it LOL I was thinking like that for awhile though.

But serioulsy, I think DP/DR will amplify any normal mental activities, even Deja Vu....soooooo like anxiety, would be worse while DP'ed/DR'ed out.....

There is an excellent article on deja vu in Scientific American Mind Volume 16, Number 1. It was out April/May of this year -- 2005

The article is noted on the cover as "Deja Vu Explained"

Inside, page 32 "Strangely Familiar" by Uwe Wolfradt
"Researchers are starting to pin down what deja vu is and why it arises. But have you read this already? Maybe you just can't remember."

Catchy --

I understood it I think as indeed reliving a moment that we think is new but is actually part of something we've already experienced -- nothng mystical... an experience that has happened seconds before.

There are pathological states of deja vu where someone can be stuck in it. That's is not a pretty picture. Again there's a normal mechansim gone bad.

Perceptual distortions like this involve sensory input/output/memory/cognitive functioning. Not easy to sort out. But the explanation given is pretty interesting.

try going to http://www.sciammind.com to see if there is an old article on it, or if you can order a back issue. That issue is really quite fascinating all around. The magazine has a number of articles on altered states of consciousness.

D
