Have you ever noticed that optimists are usually the most tight-fisted, mean, close-minded, arseholes that have ever walked the planet? I want to punch their happy smiley faces right back down their throats.

I mean it. They swan through their lives saying how wonderful things are and how lucky we are and so on, la la la la, and then you go and ask them for a favour and their arse puckers up like a camel's in a sandstorm, still with that f******g grin on their face. I don't understand it. What is wrong with these people?

Cynicism is best. At least when things go wrong you won't be disappointed. And on the rare occassion that something nice happens, it'll even more of a pleasant suprise.

I don't know if you're just kidding, but I hate it when people tell me that my only problem is my ATTITUDE. I'm too cynical, I'm too pessimistic, I'm too negative and blaa blaa blaa.

Hola gang...
Thomas Edison, probably one of the worlds greatest OPTIMIST...think about this, when he was figuring out the right material for the light bulb filiment he tried everything, to most they would have seen these trials as "failures", Edison had a different view. He quipped..."I have not FAILED 10,000 times, I have DISCOVERED 10,000 ways that will NOT WORK." Not bad if you ask me.

The cynical optimists are the worst
 Meaning me, right?

I wouldn't regard myself as a cynical optimist, really. I am cynical to the core, the root, but at the same time my attitude to the whole stinking mess is rather more, well, que sera sera. I am equally cynical about people who protest and people who don't, for example. They are both wrong in my eyes. People who moan get on my tits, and people who don't moan get on my tits. Pacifists annoy me. Radicals bore me. I hate conservatives. I want to murder socialists and communists. Nothing is 'right'. It all goes to pot in the end, so why bother. And more importantly, I can't make my mind up about anything. So what can you do except stick your fingers up at it and do your own thing ?

Nothing in reality is good enough for Martin.

And yet, Martin hates himself and thinks he's worthless.

What a conundrum.

Enough to give somebody depersonalization. Or make them drink.

p.s. I love your posts by the way, just yanking your cynical chain.

Well, I wouldn't say that nothing is good enough. Rather, it's never enough. If that makes sense. That there should be 'something more, something better'. (Martin beats off the religious with a heavy club, with nails in it).

But yeah, it does drive you to drink alright, knowing that I'm a piece of worthless sh*te but too selfish to care. And with that selfishness comes a splendid lack of Depersonalisation.

"what a conundrum"

everytime i think of that word i think of a box of cookie crisp b/c on the back it has "cookie conundrums" printed on it

and i think of how i can go through bowls of cookie crisp

waiting for the damn cereal to taste like a chocolate chip cookie

and yet...it never does

but the complete non-acceptance of "cereal is not cookie"-dum keeps me hanging on, for just one more bowl. to fix the situation. to make it right.

one day someone handed me an actual, real chocolate chip cookie. and i was cured.

but the amazing discovery was: I didn't even like chocolate chip cookies, much less a cereal that pretended to be a chocolate chip cookies.

i just ate them because of the promise of something better they held for me.

[metaphor for dp]

[i can't eat that shit it will kill me. i will die trying to find the cookie taste]

Wouldn't such a person that Martin describes be a 'pseduo optimist?' Everyone is a little bit of something. I am sure that at times even Martin has caught himself being an optimist. Lets face it, if we weren't optimistic at least some of the time, we probably would have all capped ourselves ages ago.

Are you taking intro to psych or abnormal psychology?

Anyway that makes sense to me. The same way we have to block out extraneous stimuli to be able to function, we have to block out negative thoughts or ignore horrific events in order to lead some semblance of a normal life. However, unless you are lucky and completely sheltered from reality, it has a way of knocking down our false conceptions
