I am so confused...

Went to see my new psychologist, specialised in dp/dr. Told him all my life, almost, in 50 min. And he's not charismatic. I don't know what to do. I don't know if he will help me. He cost so much that I can only see him in 2/3 weeks. And he seems snobbish.

He's the only one specialised in dissociation here. If I don't see him I will always stay with this dream problem? I feel confused. I need to talk more than 2/3 weeks.

:(

Any good comment would be appreciated.

Well damn, Cynthia...I hate to hear that about your doc.

I guess the most positive thing I can say is to give him another try or two. Maybe he was so serious today due to the fact he was gathering so much information. They can be snobbish. You just might be able to work past this and get him to relax a little for you by telling him something...that I hope Janine or someone can come up with. I can't think of it right now, but surely there is something besides, "hey, loosen up a bit, doc!".

Hey, we need a good idea here!

Has anyone dealt with this and had it work out for the best?

Wishing you the best, Cynthia.

I've said this before, but hey, I can play again, grin...

It does not matter if your therapist is an expert in dissociation. It means NOTHING, except that it will make you feel better for a MINUTE to think she/he is familiar with dp.

What does matter is that you can talk to the person and that the person understands YOU, or is willing to try...to hear your words and offer you some insights and let you develop a trust long enough to be willing to learn more about yourself in the room.

THAT is what cures. Not experts.

Love,
J

My problem is... my insurances. They cover 50 % of 1000 $ per year. So it's not too much consultations.

He cost 100 $ for 50 min. He seems to orient EMDR. I don't know... I don't want to waste my time and money. I wanted to know if he knows pretty well dp/dr.... I didn't have a cue. He said that I was having so much things that could have cause traumas that we have tot ake it one by one. I agree but.... is a specialist specialised in EMDR dp/dr and 100 $ fee is the only path to recover?

He's not warm, he's...... intellectual. He explained me dissociation in a scientific way. He says that I have a bit of dissociation, a lot of anxiety, and that if I was to be schizo, I would be by now. OK, I am not, but he didn't explained what was dr, and if it was anxiety who caused it. He said that it was too soon, to make a statement. He says that even my drug induced pot at 18 could have caused a trauma. But I lived welll since 30, so....

I was so nervous that I was dizzy. Now I am clueless. I don't have 100 $ per week to see him, but I want to heal. And there is many other psychologists I can see for 75 $ a hour. They aren't specialists in dp/dr, but they cost less than 100 $!!!

Is EMDR works? I dunno.

Hi Janine,

You were such a lucky woman to have a psychanalist who prescribes meds too! And I think he didn't cost $$$$$$.

I search someone that I will afford, because like I said it's expensive, very expensive, and I did spend A LOT in psychologists.

hi cynthia

i think you should give him a go. even if you can only afford to see him every three weeks its worth sticking with him for a bit to see if he can help. he might know his stuff and may even prescribe you a med that, given a chance, helps you.

wishing you the best

Did he offer any insight to you?

Did he give you any strategy on how to cope?

Any advice on medication?

Or did he just listen to you and take your money?

Because if he only did the latter, for 1/2 his price, I can do that too.

nothing for 50 minutes. I talked and did hyperventilation, because I was so stressed. And he just interrupted me to say hlaf of the session was gone, and ask me questions about my family, etc.

I had no advices, no insight, nothing.

That is why I don't think it's the good one.

But remember, C....this doc is an "EMDR" therapist - he is not going to be the great talker or the great listener. EMDR is a Technique - a very specific technique designed to help a person "dislodge" from a specific traumatic memory - and to "desensitize" themselves so their anxiety doesn't mount with each memory or thought that is related to the trauma.

If you want someone "warm and fuzzy" to talk to, you're not going to find that in an EMDR person.

Gotta know the Particular TYPE of therapy/treatment somebody does - that is much much MUCH more important than whether or not the doc knows a lot about dp.

And this doc might have something to offer you (I'm not personally a believer in EMDR...but that doesn't mean anything). But you should only JUDGE him as an EMDR therapist, not comparing him to others kinds of therapists.

It is VERY important to know what KIND of treatment you're choosing, guys....there are many different forms of therapy out there - NO such thing as "just therapy"

Janine is absolutely right, the doctor does not have to specialize in dp/dr to be able to help you. I believe that some of these doctors do not know how to treat this, they charge alot of money and all this does it leave you with more problems because you are now worried about having to pay for something you cannot afford. Janine is right just finding someone who you can talk to is truly more important. Depersonalization can be a seperate illness or it can be caused by anxiety, depression and many other reasons. To be able to sit down with a doctor who is able to talk to you about how you feel inside and will show understanding and not be snobbish is important. One thing we do not need when feeling unwell and down is a doctor with an attitude.

gem.
