Hi there. Ive been on this forum since 2008, but been away for a long time, as I got cured and went ahead and lived a normal life, got married and even moved countries. Subsequently in 2009, our marriage did not work out, got stressed going through the divorce, got medicated for insomnia and bang, back into DP! )-:. My story goes back to 1991 when I got Lyme disease and will try and keep this as brief as possible. Please feel welcome to ask any questions as I cannot go through every detail as its a long history of events, but I come from a medical family, and went on a complete quest to heal, had the privilege to have access to good medical care and advice, seen about every specialist, natural healer, audiologist bcs of Tinnitus, tried most medications they use for DPDR, have voluntarily admitted myself to a psych ward in 2008 and 2021 when I was at the end of my tether, and just wanted to give up.
The start of this journey was when I was diagnosed (and 4 weeks late) with Lymes disease in 1991. I was in my early 20’s, with no history of illness and incrediblty fit at the time. In South Africa they call Lyme Disease Tick Bite Fever. It took about 4 years to heal as I got encephalitis with the fever from Tick Bite fever.I had small bouts of DPDR as I experienced a sudden onset and a host of panic attacks over the years from the year of getting Lymes disease. I was the "panic attack King", as I called it, and the first time it just came out of the blue and I really thought I was having a heart attack. I was in perfect health before this, was a national athlete in rowing and did a host of sports, so there was no prior history of illness at all. In 2007,in my early 40’s I literally took one drag of weed. I have never smoked before and went into a two hour panic attack. In that split second when the panic attack started,my vision changed (dimmed and went into 2D) and I got DPDR. This time it just stuck 24/7.Cut a long story short, the DPDR was really bad and I went on a healing quest and made many appointments with doctors, specialists and psychiatrists, and went for an MRI & CT Scan. Many did not understand or could diagnose what I was experiencing and the MRI scan showed no abnormalities. After 3 years, and being put on trials of different Anti-depressants,Anti Epileptics,Benzos,Olanzapine I opted to go off all medications which I weaned off, and focused more on healthy diet, Omega 3,6,9 and Vit B12 with a good & moderate exercise programme. Within about 5 years after the incident in 2007,I reached a point of healing 100% and lived life normally again. In 2020, I went through a divorce, had bad insomnia due to anxiety and my doctor put me on an anti-depressant for mood & Benzo’s to sleep. In the 1st two weeks on Benzos I got serious DPDR again. So here I am again stuck in the weird fish bowl, and the world looking distant and strange with all the terrible visual stuff etc.I’m just hoping it passes again, working on daily exercise, diet and avoiding all stimulants AND no medication. I reckon that Lyme Disease, depending on how quickly it is diagnosed, and if late, can cause serious problems with your nervous system. One has to be extra careful and take caution if you’ve taken a physical knock from an illness which affects the brain & nervous system like parasitic diseases. So weed was not the initial problem causing the DPDR,the illness weakens one’s nervous system and makes one more susceptable to DPDR.The weed is the catalyst by over stimulating a vulnerable nervous system. What is important is that you can heal as from DPDR from what I have experienced. Healing takes time. I healed by slowly building up an exercise routine, firstly walking, then adding swimming and treadmill. Dont overdo anything, including exercise, as I see the nervous system as an electric wiring system which "shorted" when you had undue stress, trauma or triggered by a drug. One has to nurture oneself, eat healthy whats right for you. The only suppliments I took were the Omega, Vitamin C and Vitamin B's. Eat meat with fat, as the brain tissue is 98% fat, and you need fat to recover your nervous system. Keep everything in moderation.
The brain and nervous system take the longest to heal,so it takes acceptance and patience in the beginning and small steps like being grateful for small improvements. If you Google Brain Injuries, you will see how long people had a brain injury take to heal, the difference with a brain injury caused by an accident is that is a physical injury..I compare DPDR to a situation that we cause our nervous system to go into a state of dissaray, into a state of "fight or flight" a very high vibration (which we need to calm down!) DPDR didn't happen out of the blue, it took time to get there, for many reasons, be it early life trauma, having an anxious disposition, being a perfectionist (yes, its stressfull! ), and I also reckon highly creative people are very intense and anxious, or Type A personalities try and drive ourselves to hard in work etc. The Lyme disease or drug, is the catalyst taking our nervous system to the next level. So, get to a state of moderation as soon as you can, and we even have to cut out anything toxic, or draining, and that includes negative people in our lives, do moderate exercise, challenge your bad vision, get good rest, and to keep some balance its all about moderation to heal and have to set a lot of boundries. ( Will talk about this a a further post)
I will keep checking this forum, and post where I can contribute positive healing, as I am on a healing journey again and now reckon I was brought on this earth to share my journey and try help where I can, as have had a long road with DPDR.
You welcome to ask me any questions as I really would like to help you where I can. I have been on www.dpselfhelp.com since 2008 under the name of Cyberafrica. I wish you all the best with your healing journey and take care of yourself. Ian
