Hi,

Me again, I should have posted in the med section, just to know if people in there take Anafranil and how it goes.

OK

Thanks a lot.

I was prescribed anafranil before the ssri's came out (anafranil is a tricyclic isn't it?) on the hopes it would knock my hypervigalence out. Had to go to Canada to get it and was detained in customs for four hours becasue I had it in possession. I spent two days in utter misery and horror from the side effects. I refused to try to get used to it becasue I was scared of the side effects. I know nothing about meds, but anafranil seems archaic to me compared to the more specific and less side effect ssri's. I was on imiprimine (tofronil?) for four months which did nothing for dp/dr.

Bizarre because when I tried it I had almost no side effects. :(

Thanks for your comments!

Others (positives too!) appreciated! :)

I've been on Anafranil for nearly 15 years for obsessive compulsive disorder. Actually ocd is responsible for dp/dr. I guess, in my case you could say it keeps me sane. Couldn't deal with life without it. Last year i increased the dosage from 3 to 5 tablets daily. I hate the side effects, (low sex drive, mental dullness,) They suck bad!!!

Phil. I don't want to sidetrack Cynthia's thread here, but could you elaborate what you mean that ocd is the casue of dp/dr? I know at the time I tried it my doc had the same thougts, at least in terms of self scrutiny, pure obsessivens and hypervigalence. He felt anafranil would stop these thoughts and thus the dp. But are not more selective antidepressants like paxil better at targeting this? In fact I assumed anafrinal was circle filed after luvox, prozac and paxil came out. Obviously I was wrong.
Thanks jft

Years ago, before i was getting treatment for it, OCD got really bad.
The anxiety was so bad that one day it just happened. The anxiety
manifested itself in the form of derealization and everything changed colour and i came to have a different perception of the world. So what i
mean is simply that the anxiety from ocd affected my eyes, (DR), and
DR made me feel DPed.

I think other antidepressant meds like Paxil and Prozac are better in the way that they have less side effects, but Anafranil still targets serotonin
and is still used a fair bit. Mainly if a patient doesn't respond to the ssri's
then they'll be given Anafranil.
Hope that clears it up.

Any luck conquering the sex drive side effects? Anafranil has been a god send for me, but it has KILLED my sex drive...

Thx

damn these drugs and their sexual side effects. i was on remeron for 2 days then stopped because i started getting a sore throat, and just killed my orgasms. bad thing is, remeron isn't supposed to have bad sexual effects, but it sure did on me.

i'm interested in taking Anafranil though. i've read how it helps for OCD, which is what i have and i have it bad. it seems i can't stop thinking, and when something is on my mind, i can't keep it off. i've read how it's helped people lessen their OCD, so when i go back to my psychiatrist in 2 weeks, i will ask her about it.

Not really. It works a little to have a break from them on the weekend, but apart from that no luck in overcoming the sexual side effects.
Can't get viagra off my doctor so i'm getting some soon off the internet.
I'll try that and see how it goes and if that doesn't work there are still some other drugs i might try and get my hands on.

Isn't there suppose to be like a mix of Anafranil and Lamictal that really helps DP/DR symptoms?

Jordan, yes it's the better mix, if you can handle Lamictal.

I begin with Anafranil, since I can't tolerate Lamictal - for now. :(

Good luck with it!
