my psychiatrist wants to try me on this and get me off of (Remeron) Mirtazapine which has been rubbish.

Any views on Anafranil?

It's one of the older Tri-Cyclic anti-depressants, and is meant to be as good as SSRI's at relieving depression. However, it can produce some pretty nasty side effects in some people, which is why SSRI's are more popular. I was prescribed it and I only took one tablet as I felt awfull. Doesn't mean that you will though. Give it a try.

Hello. I was on Anafranil years ago and found side effects awful. It might be different for you. I got myself off it though the psychiatrist at the time was all for increasing the dose - to twice the recommended adult dose! Definitely not for me this one.

erm it is said to have these side affects but hey...does nt everything?
Drowsiness, fatigue, restlessness, confusion accompanied by disorientation (particularly in geriatric patients and patients suffering from Parkinson's disease), anxiety states, agitation, sleep disturbances, insomnia, nightmares, aggravated depression, hypomania or manic episodes, disturbed concentration, visual hallucinations, impaired memory, aggressiveness, yawning, depersonalization, activation of latent psychosis, delusions.

Most common results shown from placebo versus anafranil :was
dry mouth, constipation, nausea, dyspepsia, and anorexia; nervous system complaints, including somnolence, tremor, dizziness, nervousness and myoclonus; genitourinary complaints including changed libido, ejaculatory failure, impotence and micturition disorder; and other miscellaneous complaints, including fatigue, sweating, increased appetite, weight gain, and visual changes.

However....For the treatment of depression. Clomipramine also appears to have a mild sedative effect which may be helpful in alleviating the anxiety component often accompanying depression.

For the treatment of obsessions and compulsions in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The obsessions and compulsions must cause marked distress, be time-consuming, or significantly interfere with social or occupational functioning.

The effectiveness of clomipramine for long-term use (i.e. for more than 10 weeks) has not been systematically evaluated in placebo-controlled trials. The physician who elects to use clomipramine for extended periods should periodically re-evaluate the long term usefulness of the drug for the individual patient.

all the best jill10 xxxxx :)

Anafranil saved me from suicide and has helped keep me out of a psychiatric ward!!!
It's given me a certain quality of life that no other medication has matched, so far anyway.
Although now, my 15th year on the drug, it does seem to have lost
some efficacy, but the ocd is bearable.

It took me some time for my body to get used to it, but i eventually
did. I was actually on an extremely low dose for a year and a half
but got too sick and had to increase the dose.

I used to take 12.5mg (half a 25mg tablet) and increased it slowly
up to 125mg. That took me more than 6 months! So if the side effects
are too bothersome increasing it slowly is the key.

Good luck and be patient.
