A simple poll:

I honestly feel like I have had this condition for as long as I can remember - of course when I was little I didn't really understand, and would never have been able to ask other people if they felt the same.

Of course, looking back, all my memories now seem to have the same feeling I have now - but I cannot be certain if that is just the way I am now affecting them - as I suppose recalling memories is still classed as perception in a way.

Lastly - I cannot imagine how someone who has never experienced this percieves the world - I literally cannot imagine now feeling like this. Whether this bodes well for recovery or not, I do not know.

So my question is...

Do you feel as if you have had DP/DR all your life/as long as you can remember?

Though I know logically that I haven't had it all my life, I definitely feel as though I have. So I voted 'yes'.

Thanks for the clarification mate :)

I also feel like I'm about to fall asleep. Think I will (before I hack someone else off at me). 'Night Mr Mole. Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

P.S. Do you think we could just go quoting into infinity like this? What an experiment that would be! :p

I went to bed before I got a chance to read this! Sorry!

I used to run a forum, and the most amount of quotes I've ever seen was something like 25

I do feel as if dp has been hiding there all along in some form. I knew I view the world differently now than a year ago (prior to dp) but that didn't seem like reality either...but it probably was.

Yes, and what really pisses me off is that my shrink is always saying "well, if you've felt this way as far back as you can remember, how do you konw THAT'S not reality, and when you have those 5-second-reality states, that's not the altered state?"

I want to stab her.

But now that I think about it, I think I've always sort of had it, but I think I really really really had it when I woke up on my 12th birthday.

Weird.

that is such a ridiculous thing to say!!! sometimes shrinks can do more harm than good (imo). of course it's not reality, otherwise people would understand what you mean when you describe dp to them.

I feel like I might've had DR for some of my childhood, and slowly grew out of it until I got it back in Jan 2003. I definately havn't had this all my life though, and if I have it's been right in the background for a long time.

i dont understand how someone can have dp/dr for all their life. if its always been a part of you, how could you tell the difference between a normal concious and having dp/dr? how do you suddenly say.."oh theres something wrong" if your mind has always been like that? if someones always had it.. what would make them realize? how do they know what not living in reality is if they've never lived in reality.

i think this is a very logical question and i wonder the same thing. maybe the original poster meant they have had episodes of it come and go all their life?

I havn't had dp/dr all my life...i have been schizophrenic all my life. I didn't even know i had been hearing voices and having visions up until a couple years ago. It's been with me on and off my entire life, so i always thought it was somewhat normal. It took me a good 5 months or more to fully understand that i've been experiencing something my entire life that most everyone else does not.
