I've been so disappointed with SO many films recently. I rented Ray the other night. If you love music, if you want to see a period piece, if you want to see Jamie Foxx do an incredible job..... if you want a break from your own troubles by listening to "Hit the Road Jack", or if you want to cry to "Georgia On My Mind" ... gottat see it.
There aren't enough Disc 2 DVD extras, but listen to Taylor Hackford (director) talk a bit about working with THE Ray Charles and Jamie Foxx. Jamie Foxx went to college on a classical piano scholarship! In real life. He is truly astounding. 96 music cues. I would have PAID to work on this film.
He truly did an AMAZING job.
I'd say watch the theatrical version. The cuts made from the director's original were perfect. Just the right stuff was left in.
And as in many films these days, like "The Aviator" which had NO direction, this has some focus, a message, and it's about a real person who's a real inspiration but who was indeed tortured inside by certain demons, yet made a wonderful life for himself. Changed musical history really.
Highly recommend it.
I give it an 8 out of 10 I think. Maybe I'm in a sentimental mood, but Foxx was great as were the flashbacks of Ray's early childhood when he went blind.
The balcony is now closed.
