Hey all...I finally joined this group after a while of reading the posts. Had DP/DR on and off for years, but it's been especially bad again recently. I have a question: do you think that medication can kind of stop working after a while? See, I started on Paxil in tenth grade, seven years ago, and then about four years later, my depression and anxiety came back really badly, and i switched to celexa, and things got better again. Now things are bad again...i'm wondering if part of it could be because i wasn't taking them regularly for a while...if they could "lose their potency" so to speak. I am one of those odd people who is all about medication, because it changed my life when i was at my worst. However, has anyone heard of medication not working after a while, and could it be because i wasn't taking them regularly for a while? I guess i could ask a psychiatrist this question, but I am without one right now, my family practitioner is doing it (not a good plan).
Sedcondly, has anyone ever read the book "Perks Of Being A Wallflower?" It is my favorite book, i give it away as presents every Christmas. Anyway, the main character in the book (it is in the form of letters) has what I would consider dp/dr states, and there are some really good descriptions in it.
Finally, does anyone have problems with dp/dr states when driving? It has been the worst time for me, just driving around town, especially at night or on long trips.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this. Sorry if I rambled on too long, but it's late and i'm tired :D

I have had the "medication does not work anymore" experience with Paxil. I was on 10mg for 4 years, tapered myself off, and then had to go back on after 3 weeks. The 10mg didn't work anymore. The doctor upped the dosage to 20 mg, and that finally seems to be doing the trick. The response I got from him was "Well, nobody really knows why they stop working at a certain dosage, but they sometimes do". My feeling is that the body becomes tolerant to substances over time (alocohol, caffeine, Paxil, etc).

I have never read the book you mentioned.

My DP is fine when I drive, but my DR gets worse. I think it's more of an agoraphobia issue behind the wheel because I know I cannot escape if necessary.

Hey
I actually just got my medication increased because my doctor told me that you can become sort of immune to a certain medication if you've been on it for awhile. So right now we're trying the increase and if that doesn't help she's going to switch me to a different kind.
So yes, to answer your question, your medication can "stop working" so to speak.
But you should definetly talk to your doctor!!
