Things to consider

04 February 2016 - 01:31 PM

This post is intended to be read as a self-help inquiry. I'm just going to write out some things that have helped me, and things I've read that have helped other people.

First off, if you're an anxious person, I recommend to avoid the following:

  • Weed
  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Other recreational drugs

All of these have been known to trigger DP, or make it worse.

What was the trigger of your DP?

  • Anxiety / OCD / Depression
  • Panic Attacks
  • Stress (break-up, death of a loved one, work pressure, health, etc.)
  • Trauma (abusive relationship, rape, assault, car accident, witnessing a death or someone being severely hurt, etc.)
  • Existential / Philosophical Thinking (getting sucked into a world of anxiety-provoking thoughts that distorts reality)
  • Heavy Drug Use (or weed)
  • Other

Recommendations based on trigger

If your DP came after a traumatic event (panic attack, physical / mental / emotional abuse, accidents etc.)  I recommend seeing a therapist for EMDR.

Another exercise you can try by yourself, are some trauma releasing exercises (TRE). These have been helpful for some. They are intended to be done a few times or more a week.
TREhttp://www.4shared.c...ma_Releasi.htmlhttp://www.4shared.c...ma_Releasi.html (The exercises start at the 25 minute mark. Though if it's your first time, I recommend watching the whole thing to understand it)

If your DP came after long-term Anxiety, Stress, OCD, or Existential Thinking I recommend CBT and ERP, as well as mindfulness and meditation.

If you don't know the cause of your DP, I still recommend meditation and mindfulness as an attempt to further understand yourself. Also, I recommend that you talk to a therapist who knows about dissociation disorders to help you discover why you dissociated.

If you have brain fog associated with DP, I recommend reading this article:

If you have any questions or things you'd like to add, just add it below.

Who has tried meditation consistently for ~8 weeks or more? What results did you have?
