About Me

An Affordable Programme:

In my experience, DP is typically caused by two things, which I think of as the the two tiers of dissociation.

The first is an anxiety loop, where we become obsessed with symptoms and are constantly analyzing them, thereby maintaining them through constant worry and mental exhaustion. This is what the first book I recommend is for.

At Last a Life, by Paul David:

A popular choice on the site, this gave me permission to stop constantly searching inside myself for answers. I would recommend this for more anxiety-based DP brought on by known triggers, including marijuana use. This is the first port of call.

The second cause is deeper underlying issues relating to our sense of self, self-worth, and the fundamental belief that we are somehow bad or flawed. This causes us to turn against ourselves and fuels dissociation. This is what my next recommendation is for.

Evolving Self Confidence, by Terry Dixon:

This book addresses the negative core beliefs that can drive mental illness and undermine our attempts at recovery. For me this was the missing piece of the puzzle. I would recommend this for more complex or chronic dissociation, with issues like learned helplessness, self-sabotage and toxic shame. Nothing else worked for me until I had first spent time building a solid foundation using this approach.

Together these two books cover the most important information from the best known programmes, but make a much cheaper alternative, especially if you can get them secondhand.

These days I like to work with a self-help classic called The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy. When I first read it ten years ago I could do nothing with it, but now I am able to make use of methods I couldn't use before I find its principles so positive and helpful.
